Ay,Macarena!,
By Amaranth "music fan" (Northern California) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Macarena (MP3 Download)
"Macarena" is Los Del Rio's (in)famous one-hit wonder. Like the Lambada, the "Forbidden Dance" that preceded it,it was a dance craze. While the Lambada was attempting to make the horizontal mambo vertical, and had SOME sex appeal (see the two movies it inspired in 1990 for visual proof),the dance moves for the Macarena are---stupid. The Macarena has cheesy moves, and its lyrics don't help. In the original music video,Los Del Rio (a duo of senior, constipated Mexican men) sing the praises of Macarena, who has a hot body. It's not erotic-it's CREEPY! Is it any wonder that the late Jerry Falwell,as well as Mother Angelica of EWTN,condemned this song?Velasquez's version of the Macarena is simply a slightly remixed version of the original. It doesn't differ much from the original, except it has a subtly thumping, throbbing beat. It's not sexy. It works best as background music for a quasi-Mexican cantina. It's an anti-aphrodisiac. "Macarena" is a lousy example of Latin music. If you want something SEXY,listen to Ivette Sangalo,Gal Costa,Ana Rita Simonka or Chico Cesar instead. Dance the Lambada!
