5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and inspiring little book! August 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book because the pictures were so enticing. I love to bake and I thought I'd try my hand at macaron making. This book is just lovely! It inspires me every time I look at it. I bought one for my friend's birthday as well and she loves it! Now we exchange stories about how our respective batches of macarons turned out. So far, I can't say I've perfected the art, but I am working on it. I felt like the only problem with the recipes is that everything tasted a little too sweet to me. I tried cutting down the sugar in the basic macaron, but it seemed to affect more than just the taste, so I won't do that again. Cutting down the sugar in the fillings was not a problem, however. I would highly recommend this book!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money May 19, 2012

What a disappointment this book is!! I will be returning it!! I had made macarons three times before I bought this book: two turned out well, one was a melted disaster!! But even the ones that turned out WELL were not great. I was hoping to get a bunch of tips and troubleshooting info on how to make these perfectly every time. This book only has two pages of instruction! And doesn't even mention the most important thing which has to do with how humid the air is when you make them!! The flavor combinations seem good and the photos are amazing so if you are already an expert on macarons you might like this. But otherwise save your money. I haven't found one yet to replace it but I will be looking. In the meantime I have found better recipes on the web and a couple good videos on YouTube although the best one is actually in French. But you can learn a lot just by watching without understanding the words.

2.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing November 17, 2011

Format:Hardcover
I bought this book because I loved the idea of making tasty, pretty desserts and wanted to try my hand at macarons. I've had tons of success with whoopie pies and other such treats, so I didn't expect to have problems with macarons, especially after buying an entire cookbook full of them. Unfortunatley, this was not the case. I followed the recipes to the letter and still turned out disastrous macarons (several times!). They tasted OK- but half the point of macarons is their attractive appearance.
I was really dissapointed in the instructions of this book. There are only 2 pages that basically 'teach' you how to make macarons- the rest are just variations of recipes. There are very few 'tips' on how to get them right. This is not the cookbook for a macaron beginner.
A friend told me one of the reasons my macarons were a failure is because I was using regular powdered sugar (which they add cornstarch to)- apparently you need powdered sugar without constarch. Again, if this cookbook doesn't give me enough information to make successful macarons- why did I buy it? Really dissapointed!
