Good spray,

I have used this spray on dogs and it works. It is far more humane than the pepper spray intended for humans and safer than the alternative which could be the dog getting put to sleep because he bit a human or mauled a small dog.I walk 3 dogs and a baby in a stroller and for some reason that makes dogs run out of their yard and attack my dogs. I got sick of getting bit separating fights so I now spray any dog that charges after us out of their yard when the owner is not around to call their dog off. This spray does spray far and it sprays in a stream (not a mist) so it's easy to hit your target (the aggressive dog's nose) without accidentally spraying your own dog. It's a red thick substance. The dog gets hit with the spray and runs to the side, cowers and I assume is ok soon enough because I'll see the dog the next day and he's fine. If the owner finally appears I tell him to use whole milk to soothe the burn and then dish detergent and water to wash off the oil. Be sure to shake the canister before you go out and test it from time to time. All of my pepper sprays eventually clog up and don't spray as they get older so I replace it 2-3 times a year.

Do you really care about being humane when savagely attacked?,

When I was out of town my wife went for a walk with our large labradoodle (90 lbs) and our golden retriever (80 lbs). She usually carries this Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray because there are a lot of stray dogs in our neighborhood. The one day I wasn't with her a large aggressive pit-bull started following her and our dogs. She stopped and yelled at it to go away, reaching for the Mace. The dog approached anyway, and started growling at them. My wife fumbled with the Mace, trying to get it to spray. It took her a while to figure out the safety flap, costing them a couple seconds. The stray dog was now snarling and on top of our labradoodle. She sprayed it directly in the face from a close distance. It had absolutely no effect. The only thing that saved her was her loud screaming. It's possible that the Mace kicked in minutes later and the dog gave up, but I would never trust her out on her own with this product as her only defense. I'm looking for much stronger stuff now. Go for 17% OC and burn the aggressor's eyes shut.

Bad design,
By John Green (San Mateo,CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
Other people already complained that when you push the button, you do not get the advertised spray - instead the yellow oily liquid drips down on your fingers, which give you pretty strong irritation and pain for about one day. I found that this is due too poor design of the discharge mechanism - you have to push the button at one specific place - near the hinge - to get a stream. But it is a very narrow stream - not a spray - so it is impossible to hit a quick charging dog. Every other household aerosol product have reliable discharge nozzle, which gives equal amount of spray at equal distance. I do not understand why this Mace product is so unreliable. For this reason I consider this product useless and even dangerous.
