5.0 out of 5 stars Something every dog owner should consider carrying
It comes in a convenient size. I clip the mace on the front little pocket of my jeans when I take my two King Charles Spaniels for walks just in case we are ever attacked by other dogs or people. 3.0 out of 5 stars The way it sprays is like a stream of rain
I wouldn't count on this spray to keep an AGGRESSIVE dog away. It sprays in a single LIGHT line and, thus, the dog has to be close for you to get it. I recommend the SABRE brand; the line it sprays is thicker, stronger, and the smell itself will keep an aggressive animal from you.

1.0 out of 5 stars Failure to spray, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
I was riding my horse and an off leash dog became aggressive with my horse. I pulled out my "muzzle repellent spray" and squirted the dog twice on the back. I went to press the button for a third squirt and the nozzle just fizzed with mist. I thought to myself that it was odd that the bottle was already empty and had barely been used. Luckily the first two squirts scared the dog away. I then squirted the bottle again to test it and it fired properly...squirted again and it fizzed. I shook the can and I could tell there was still liquid in the can. The spray action is not reliable. I have bought a different product and hopefully that will work.
sincerely, Wendy

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible defense against stray dogs, May 25, 2010
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
When I was out of town my wife went for a walk with our large labradoodle (90 lbs) and our golden retriever (80 lbs). She usually carries this Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray because there are a lot of stray dogs in our neighborhood. The one day I wasn't with her a large aggressive pit-bull started following her and our dogs. She stopped and yelled at it to go away, reaching for the Mace. The dog approached anyway, and started growling at them. My wife fumbled with the Mace, trying to get it to spray. It took her a while to figure out the safety flap, costing them a couple seconds. The stray dog was now snarling and on top of our labradoodle. She sprayed it directly in the face from a close distance. It had absolutely no effect.

The only thing that saved her was her loud screaming. It's possible that the Mace kicked in minutes later and the dog gave up, but I would never trust her out on her own with this product as her only defense. I'm looking for much stronger stuff now.

1.0 out of 5 stars Mace Dog spray, January 7, 2010

I was very disappointed after I received this product and found it only contains .35% OC!! I've had to use Human pepper spray (10% OC) on pit bulldogs and other large dogs. And it worked! Also the human pepper spray containing 10% didn't cause any permanent harm to either of the dogs that I used it on.
I'm not too concerned with the humane aspect when I'm being charged by a large vicious dog. I want something that I KNOW will stop the dog! I doubt this stuff would slow down a large vicious dog.
I can't afford to take a chance for I take blood anti-coagulants.

Update on the above review.
Today, Jan. 1, 2010, I tried the product on a large dog. Lucky for me the dog wasn't too aggressive and the owner was near by.
First, there was very LITTLE pressure on the container, most of the spray ran out on the side of the container down on to my hand! It did produce a tiny stream that went out about 3 feet. That was not enough it get it on the dogs head. Then that was all that was in the container. The owner yelled at the dog and he came to get the dog.

I can only think of what might happen had the dog been aggressive. I rate this product poor.

1.0 out of 5 stars Product Failed Me, November 5, 2011

This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
I was going for a walk with my 8 month old baby when two pit bulls from no where charged at us in a quiet residential neighborhood. They surrounded us with thunderous barks and growls while inching in on us. I sprayed and sprayed this product to no avail. The orange stream hit the dogs on their faces but had NO EFFECT. When I realized this, I screamed and tried to get on a car but that was difficult with the baby who was strapped to me in a Baby Bjorn harness. Finally neighbors came out to scare the dogs away. I shudder to think of what would have been. I would NOT RELY on this product. Also, given htis experience, I think a range of 8-10 ft is too short when facing a vicious and intimidating animal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Something every dog owner should consider carrying, April 30, 2011

It comes in a convenient size. I clip the mace on the front little pocket of my jeans when I take my two King Charles Spaniels for walks just in case we are ever attacked by other dogs or people. It makes me feel a little more secure to carry it. It also comes with instructions on how to use it which consists of flipping the safety tab up with your thumb and pushing down on the spray release button all in the same motion and it's designed to give you a straight shot every time (so you don't accidently spray yourself in the face). The mace also comes with an expiration date (it's about five years) when it should be replaced. The instructions say that it has a range of 10 feet, but I haven't actually tested it, or ever had to use it...thank God. It is legal for persons over the age of 18 (including felons) to carry in most states and is relatively inexpensive to purchase. I highly recommend this product.
