I have used this spray on dogs and it works. It is far more humane than the pepper spray intended for humans and safer than the alternative which could be the dog getting put to sleep because he bit a human or mauled a small dog.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good spray, August 6, 2009

I have used this spray on dogs and it works. It is far more humane than the pepper spray intended for humans and safer than the alternative which could be the dog getting put to sleep because he bit a human or mauled a small dog.

I walk 3 dogs and a baby in a stroller and for some reason that makes dogs run out of their yard and attack my dogs. I got sick of getting bit separating fights so I now spray any dog that charges after us out of their yard when the owner is not around to call their dog off. This spray does spray far and it sprays in a stream (not a mist) so it's easy to hit your target (the aggressive dog's nose) without accidentally spraying your own dog. It's a red thick substance. The dog gets hit with the spray and runs to the side, cowers and I assume is ok soon enough because I'll see the dog the next day and he's fine. If the owner finally appears I tell him to use whole milk to soothe the burn and then dish detergent and water to wash off the oil.

Be sure to shake the canister before you go out and test it from time to time. All of my pepper sprays eventually clog up and don't spray as they get older so I replace it 2-3 times a year.

1.0 out of 5 stars Do you really care about being humane when savagely attacked?, May 25, 2010
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
When I was out of town my wife went for a walk with our large labradoodle (90 lbs) and our golden retriever (80 lbs). She usually carries this Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray because there are a lot of stray dogs in our neighborhood. The one day I wasn't with her a large aggressive pit-bull started following her and our dogs. She stopped and yelled at it to go away, reaching for the Mace. The dog approached anyway, and started growling at them. My wife fumbled with the Mace, trying to get it to spray. It took her a while to figure out the safety flap, costing them a couple seconds. The stray dog was now snarling and on top of our labradoodle. She sprayed it directly in the face from a close distance. It had absolutely no effect.

The only thing that saved her was her loud screaming. It's possible that the Mace kicked in minutes later and the dog gave up, but I would never trust her out on her own with this product as her only defense. I'm looking for much stronger stuff now. Go for 17% OC and burn the aggressor's eyes shut.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad design, July 10, 2010

Other people already complained that when you push the button, you do not get the advertised spray - instead the yellow oily liquid drips down on your fingers, which give you pretty strong irritation and pain for about one day. I found that this is due too poor design of the discharge mechanism - you have to push the button at one specific place - near the hinge - to get a stream. But it is a very narrow stream - not a spray - so it is impossible to hit a quick charging dog. Every other household aerosol product have reliable discharge nozzle, which gives equal amount of spray at equal distance. I do not understand why this Mace product is so unreliable. For this reason I consider this product useless and even dangerous.

I was very disappointed after I received this product and found it only contains .35% OC!! I've had to use Human pepper spray (10% OC) on pit bulldogs and other large dogs. And it worked! Also the human pepper spray containing 10% didn't cause any permanent harm to either of the dogs that I used it on.

I'm not too concerned with the humane aspect when I'm being charged by a large vicious dog. I want something that I KNOW will stop the dog! I doubt this stuff would slow down a large vicious dog.

I can't afford to take a chance for I take blood anti-coagulants.

Update on the above review.

Today, Jan. 1, 2010, I tried the product on a large dog. Lucky for me the dog wasn't too aggressive and the owner was near by.

First, there was very LITTLE pressure on the container, most of the spray ran out on the side of the container down on to my hand! It did produce a tiny stream that went out about 3 feet. That was not enough it get it on the dogs head. Then that was all that was in the container. The owner yelled at the dog and he came to get the dog.

I can only think of what might happen had the dog been aggressive. I rate this product the low side of poor.

1.0 out of 5 stars False confidence!, July 4, 2011
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
Both my wife and I each carried the Muzzle brand Aerosol Dog Repellent... from MACE. We walk our mountain community neighborhood every morning. Things were just fine... until we needed it. A large dog attack my wife and our small dog. She tried to use the spray... it put out a small little squirt about 2ft! So... out of disperation she charged the dog and it retreated. When she got back home, we tried the other can... it did the same thing. Both cans still have a current date on them. THIS STUFF IS JUNK... Don't put you faith in it or depend on it for your safety.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does not Work, November 5, 2011
By
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
This product simply does not work. I was walking my 8 month old son (strapped to my chest by a Baby Bjorn harness) in what I thought was a safe and civilized suburban neighborhood. Two large pit bulls then charged at us from their front yards. My son and I were quickly surrounded and cornered by these two barking dogs. I sprayed and sprayed to no avail. When I realized the product did not work, I just screamed my head off and tried to stand on top of a car. Finally neighbors came out to help. I shudder to think of what could have been. You don't give birth to a child just to have it mauled by dogs. The whole experience was surreal. I will return this product and get something with a much higher OC. Do NOT rely on this product.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont Bother With These Products - Here's My Solution, March 28, 2010
This review is from: Mace Brand Muzzle Dog Repellent Spray (Misc.)
I've tried these products and they don't work. Here's the best solution. I live in a neighborhood with annoying dogs and irresponsible owners. I'm a teacher and I don't have a car - so I have to walk home at night and deal with these 4 legged pests on the street.

So here's my solution when a stupid dog is charging at you.

(1) When the dog begins charging, do not flinch and do not show fear - instead, get angry and stand your ground.

(2) Wait until the idiot dog is about 4 feet away from you.

(3) Charge them with the DOUBLE BLOW.

What's the double blow you might ask? Its a small tin of "powerful insecticide" and a "powerful flashlight". You blind them and mess up their noses at the same time. Do that a few times and the dog would run like hell whenever it sees you.

Now some people may say that this is not humane - but is the dog being humane by trying to tear your face off every time you walk down the street? - Didn't think so!

Also, if the stupid owner of the dog comes charging after you, give him the DOUBLE BLOW treatment also for allowing his dumb dog to run all over the street. Stupid owners - sometime I wonder who owns who!

It seems easy to handle and would probably work if some dog tried to attack my dog. That is the reason I bought it.

Although I have not needed to use or target anything, the reputation of the product is excellent and I believe that it would perform as an excellent nonlethal defensive weapon, if ever needed, against agressive canines or humans.
