BEST magazine for Mac users,

I've been a Mac user since 1987 and have read or seen almost every Mac related magazine out there. My former favorite was MacUser Magazine. Unfortunately, it was long ago swallowed up by MacWorld. I used to enjoy the old MacAddict mag, but it has lost some of its bite (yes, it was occasionally childish as well, but that was a big part of its charm for me) since becomming MacLife.
I ran into MacFormat while browsing the computer mags at some book store and bought it on a whim based on some of the included programs on the DVD it came with. A bit pricey at over $15, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I'm very glad I did. The writing is first rate, the tutorials are must reads that while written for a novice will give you tips and tricks that you might not have thought of yourself. The included DVD almost always has software I can't help installing and I have purchased a few of the demo apps just based on their recommendations. Because the magazine is based out of the UK, very few of the ads will mean much to US readers, but you can certainly find retailers for hardware elsewhere. Magazines like Macworld and MacLife are certainly cheaper, but as with many things in life, you get what you pay for. I get more out of MacFormat each month than either of the others and I highly recommend it for Mac users wanting to get more in depth information. I took one star away for the price and not having a US version.

Great Magazine,

I read both MacFormat and iCreate. I find that MacFormat is geared more towards intermediate and advanced users whereas iCreate is geared towards beginners and intermediate users. Excellent articles with excellent instruction.

MacFormat a Great Mac magazine,

I spent 5 months in Thailand with my MacBook Pro and an electronic version of MacWorld and came across MacFormat for the first time. It is by far the best magazine with insightful and useful articles, tips, reviews and other information that CAN BE USED by most Mac users. I waited anxiously for each issue to hit the stand and because I could not afford the weight of bringing home all the older copies of MacFormat I went thru each issue and cut out the pages I wanted to bring home to the states. For USA residents this is not a cheap subscription but the magazine is excellent and I feel worth the money. I feel the same about iCreate and consider them both my favorite magazines by far. MacWorld is a really good magazine for general information and some useful tips, but MacFormat by far has the biggest bank for the buck when it comes to aritcles and tips that can be used. My vote is iCreate and MacFormat, but in both cases expect to pay for the quality. LOL, part of the price for being a Mac fanatic.

After switching to a Mac in 2009, i started buying different magazines, etc., trying to learn all the tips and tricks I could so that I could become more proficient. I have been using a PC prior to that since about 1994. I have to say that of all of them, I find Mac Format the absolute best. It does a great job of covering a variety of Mac related topics, and I eagerly await it's monthly arrival.
I also liked iCreate at first, but over time, I learned that iCreate seems to be much more focused on using Pages, Keynote, iPhoto, iWeb, and Numbers. I'm not as interested in any of those, as I use Office 2011 (so that I am compatible with our Windows counterparts for the work we do with the US Government and other Government related contractors) for office related work, RapidWeaver for our company website, and Aperture for photos. I still like iCreate, it just doesn't offer the value MacFormat does. For example - iCreate charges $26 for 6 months o(r $52 for 12 months) extra ON TOP of the >$140 subscription price just to access each issue on an iPad or iPhone, while MacFormat gives you access to them for free!! All you need to do to access them is log in to [...] using your Subscriber number and last name, where you'll find the latest issue as well as previous issues. And on top of that, you can download the latest issue 2 weeks before the print version arrives. No comparison to other Mac magazines - this is the way to go. Keep up the good work MacFormat!!

I do not subscribe...yet. At over $100/year, its steep but its the best Mac magazine I have read and I currently subscribe to MacAddict and MacWorld and have previously subscribed to MacHome Journal, MacDesign (MacToday), MacUser, and a bunch of PC biased magazines. Hands down the best...don't hesitate to subscribe if you can afford it.

Best Mac magazine, better than Macworld or Maclife. Great information inside, for beginners and for advanced users.

As a long time Machead, I have been picking up MacFormat from Barnes & Nobles for several years, but the BN stores closest to me stopped making it available. What to do? Well, as they always say, "Google and Amazon are your friends!" I was happy to see this magazine available from Amazon, and snapped it up, in spite of the wait one must endure getting it from across the pond.MacFormat is the UK's #1 Mac rag, covering all things Apple - from desktops and laptops, to iPods and iPads. The writing is crisp with a slight humorous bend and it is always good to see a completely different slant on what is going on at Apple HQ; many U.S. magazines tend to have the same feel to them, no doubt due to the lack of diversity in writers here; they seem to just recycle the same ones from magazine to magazine. I think what scares many people off from this fine piece of writing is the price, but upon further examination, you will find that the enclosed CD that comes with the monthly magazine more than makes up for the cost. There is always one or two free full-app programs - not shareware or crippleware, but programs that you can run and use to their fullest extent. The combination of full software, top freeware, tutorials, widgets, reviews and podcasts make the magazine worth the wait as it wings it way from overseas. |
