I don't like this 5 star rating system, it does not allow for enough choice...if this was a 10 star system this book would get a 7. I enjoyed reading the stories, which were light and cheerful. If you want to read a book as a pick-me-up, then here's your book. There was no depth to this book, either in characters or plot. You have three different (though all strong)...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hand-picked Grooms from Grandpa, September 3, 2002
You're young, you're single, you're living alone with your two cousins in an exciting Boston neighborhood. One of you is a surgical resident, one is a brand-new lawyer, and one is a successful real-estate agent. Do you need your 90-year-old grandfather to pick your boyfriends?

Yes! Or so thinks irrascible MacGregor patriarch Daniel MacGregor, who meddled in his children's lives, and is now at it again. He wants his three granddaughters married and producing babies for his "dear Anna," a successful doctor in her own right who has made no such request. So The MacGregor gets to work...

First on his list is Laura, impossibly beautiful and smart, who has joined her parents' law firm after passing the Bar. She doesn't need a man, thank you, and she certainly doesn't need the gorgeous, sexy, smart and tough ex-cop sent by Grandpa to install a security system at Laura's (and her cousins') home. Royce Cameron is a major pain in the neck, and Laura wants nothing to do with him...except that for some inexplicable reason, she can't get the hunky ex-cop off her mind.

Gwen, a cool-under-pressure, classically beautiful blonde, is in her second year as a surgical resident. She doesn't need any more pressure, especially from a successful author who is researching his next mystery novel and needs input from a practicing physician. It seems that deep and sexy Bran was recommended by a certain Daniel MacGregor, and shows up at the hospital just as Gwen is saving a life in the ER. Exhausted and disheveled, Gwen wants nothing to do with this guy...who begins to woo her, literally, with wine and roses.

Feisty Julia, Laura and Gwen's cousin and former First Daughter, relishes her freedom, especially after years growing up in the White House. What she loves most is to buy property, have it rehabbed, and sell it for huge profits. And she's great at it. She has a contractor she works with, and the last thing she needs is a substitute--the contractor's impossibly hunky son, Cullum. Neither Julia nor Cullum are looking for a relationship, especially with each other, and the intense attraction they feel for one another is just an itch. Right? Ask The MacGregor, who happens to be best buds with Cullum's father.

This is a sheer delight from start to finish, Nora Roberts at her very best. A prequel to "The MacGregor Grooms," it's the type of book you read at one sitting and then get sad because there isn't any more! A must for hopeless romantics.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WINNER!!!, November 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Macgregor Brides (Macgregors) (Paperback)
God! I am so in love with the MacGregor clan! In THE MACGREGOR BRIDES, we meet Laura, Gwendolyn, and Julia. Their grandfather Daniel, "the MacGregor", has decided it's time they should wed. He has found the perfect men for them, Royce Cameron, Branson Macguire, and Callum Murdock. He manages to have them cross paths and waits for the sparks to fly. And they do fly! You just can't help but fall in love with these gorgeous men and cheer them on throughout the book. They are the perfect matches to these three incredibly stubborn women, a MacGregor trait. Also included in the story are Justin and Serena Blade, Caine and Diana MacGregor, Alan and Shelby MacGregor, Ian MacGregor, and of course, Daniel and Anna MacGregor. You'll just fall in love with this family. Also try to read THE WINNING HAND, Richard "Mac"(the oldest MacGregor grandson) and Darcy Macgregor's story, and THE MACGREGOR GROOMS, where "The MacGregor" targets his other grandsons DC, Duncan, and Ian. Trust me, you'll love them all!

4.0 out of 5 stars Same story, told three times, August 9, 2007
By
Nora Roberts tells essentially the same story three times here. A beautiful, accomplished, strong-willed young woman meets a handsome, successful, determined young man and they clash, before discovering that they have the hots for each other. It's as simple as that. In fact, Ms. Roberts does the same in all her books, changing the names, occupations and locale. And she does it better than just about anyone.

There's always a scene in which they "plunder." She actually uses that verb a lot. I try to imagine it, and it always feels a little vague. There's plundering in all three stories of this book.

The real talent is in the creation of the atmosphere. Nora Roberts is really good at that, and it shows here as in her other works. One can read the books for that alone. She takes the reader on a journey, and isn't that why we read fiction?

I give this 4 stars for the sense of place. I'd give it five stars if the plundering were a little more of a surprise.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite NR's books, February 21, 2007
This review is from: Macgregor Brides (Macgregors) (Paperback)
Daniel MacGregor is still at his match making this time matching his three granddaughters Laura, Gwen and Julia to ment he thinks will be perfect for them. Naturally neither one is too thrilled. Their three independent career women who think different. Laura who followed her parents into law school and now works for her parents' law firm is first when her grandfather sets her up with Royce Cameron who's conviently installing a security system for her and her cousins. Next is Dr. Gwen who ends having writer Bran pick her brain about being a doctor for his next novel. Last comes former first daughter and real estate agent Julia who's putting together a new house with Cullom, the son of her favorite contractor whom she doesn't like. All three are wonderful stories you can read again and again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic.., February 9, 2006
This review is from: Macgregor Brides (Macgregors) (Paperback)
Here comes the Brides
In the continuing saga of the Macgregors, Nora Roberts introduces us to three grown up granddaughters of the likeable Patrioch, Daniel Macgregor. There's Laura, Gwen, and Julia, cousins. All three independent and hard working. Sharing a house, they are very close to each other and family and find that they have now caught the notice of their lovable grandfather. He has decided that they have been single long enough and sets off to put in their paths Mr. Right. What ensues will make you laugh, and cry and shout for more as each story winds to its end. I found their lives and the way they are led from beginnig to end so much fun to read I couldn't put it down. Definitely a good read. I think you'll enjoy their stories, so go out and read it soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great work by the genre's best, September 17, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Macgregor Brides (Macgregors) (Paperback)

Julia, Laura, and Gwendolyn are cousins who happen to be the best of friends. The trio share a home in one Boston's most exclusive neighborhoods. They make up the youngest generation of the renowned MacGregor dynasty, headed up by the eccentric cutthroat businessman, Daniel MacGregor. All of Daniel's three granddaughters are aware of the matchmaking role he played in their parents' marriages. None of them believe that they would fall for any of his machinations. They will have the opportunity to test that premise because Daniel believes that it is time his three darling girls are married and he has selected the perfect candidate for each of them.

THE MACGREGOR BRIDES gives readers a chance to become reacquainted with some old and dear friends while introducing the next generation of the beloved dynasty. Nora Roberts' fans will find themselves endowed with a plethora of riches as they are given three exciting and entertaining stories in one delicious book. The latest Roberts' masterpiece make for the perfect Christmas stocking stuffer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romance Plus, September 9, 2007
This book was my introduction to the MacGregor Family. I instantly fell in love with every single one of them; so much so that I am now going back to the beginning and reading "Rebellion" to fully understand the how and why of the MacGregor clan. In "Brides," Nora Roberts takes us through the romantic journey and subsequent pairings of the three MacGregor granddaughters - Laura (the attorney) and the man grandpa hired to keep the home the cousins shared security-tight, Royce Cameron, Gwendolyn (the doctor), matched by grandpa with writer, Branson McGuire, and Julia (the real estate mogul), fighting all the way to the altar with builder/contractor, Cullum Murdoch, and, on this one, a two-fisted match made unknowingly not only by Daniel, but Cullum's own father, Michael, as well. Daniel MacGregor, Sr., begins each story with his memoirs as to the manner in which he had a working hand in each matching. The chosen three men were strong and handsome with exemplary values and great genes (according to the MacGregor)! Even though each story was quite similar where boy pursues girl, girl puts up a fight and finally gives in, hook, line and sinker, the stories are told in a captivating and interesting manner so that even the most unsympathetic romance reader has no choice but to delve into the lives of this fabulous family. I have read earlier romance books by Nora and felt they were just your typical soap-opera, happy ending stories, however, I believe the MacGregors themselves give the romance stories the strength and attention that encourages the reader to want to be a part of the family, albeit the amorous and idealistic worlds that only fiction can unfurl. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories and look forward to future MacGregor adventures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Romantic and funny -- in true Nora Roberts' style!, August 21, 2005
This review is from: Macgregor Brides (Macgregors) (Paperback)
The first book I read by Nora Roberts were Serena, Caine and Alan MacGregor's stories of meeting their prospective spouses, Justin Blade, Diana Blade and Shelby Campbell respectively. I was quite excited to see a story about a new generation of MacGregor's and thus revisit Daniel ("The MacGregor") and his lovely wife Anna. Daniel acts like a real patriarch and curmudgeon but is really a softie. He is so in love with Anna (I highly recommend their story if you haven't read it!) and he dearly loves his children and now grandchildren so you know he only wants the best.

His oldest three granddaughters are cousins and share a home in Boston. The MacGregor decides it is time for them to think about getting married and to provide a "good prospect" for each of them. It is up to them whether anything more happens but he tries hard to match them with a man who will complement their personalities and style.

The first to be "matched" is Laura MacGregor, daughter of Caine and Diana, and a newly passed-the-bar lawyer herself. She works at her parents' firm. Daniel calls her early in the morning to let her know that a "present" is coming by. She is sleepy and doesn't get it so just goes about getting ready for her day in her sleep attire of T-shirt and boxer shorts. Royce Cameron, a security expert and ex-cop, knocks on the door, rings the bell and finally lets himself in with a key Daniel gave him assuming no one is home so he can look over the place for a security system. He comes upon Laura in the kitchen with headphones on singing/screeching along to a song and admires the rear view. He startles her and she grabs and knife before he is able to get her to take off the headphones so he can explain who he is. That is the start of a very funny relationship as they do seem to strike each other the wrong way for a bit especially as Royce is not too fond of lawyers that defend criminals. This was a very lovely story and a lot of fun.

The next granddaughter is Justin and Serena's daughter, Gwendolyn Blade. She completed medical school early and is working on a surgical residency and currently doing a shift in the ER. Branson Maguire is a well-known author of detective novels starring a male character named Scully. Daniel recommends, of course, he talk to Gwen when Branson wants to do a story with Scully involving a female murderer who is also a doctor. I loved Branson as he sends her 3 dozen roses to soften her up - works for me! As Gwen and Branson spend more and more time together - he basically is following her around at home, shopping and at the hospital - the attraction grows. The tough part is for them to admit they are in love and want to be married.

The third story is about Julia MacGregor who was the First Daughter when her dad, Alan MacGregor was President. She buys homes and small flats and rehabs them and sells them. She has worked with her favorite construction company manned by Michael Murdoch, a friend of her grandfather's. She knows of his son, Cullum, but they are both very strong personalities and thus avoid each other as much as possible when he is on her jobs. Michael Murdoch and The MacGregor get in cahootsr to push them together for longer as Michael swears to Daniel that he has seen "sparks" flying off both of them. To do this, Michael pretends to have a cold and so makes Cullum go in his place to meet with Julia. They end up working together constantly and arguing and betting and conceding and so on but the job they are doing on the lovely home in Boston that Julia purchased becomes a real labor of love - for both of them!!

Very romantic and satisfying stories all three.

You have three different (though all strong) women and a scheming grandfather who "hooks" each one up. Someone wrote in one of the reviews, that the stories were just too perfect... I tend to agree. Where can I get a man like Branson? Ah well, if you like this type of reading, you will enjoy this book, personally i perfer her other longer novels, such as the "Born In" series.
