5.0 out of 5 stars What a great way to spend an afternoon!
If you're looking for great intellect you won't find it here - but it you just want to spend an afternoon with some characters that you come to love this series is for you! This book is the best one to start with in the MacGregor series - then read Alan & Grant, The MacGregor Brides, Winning Hand, MacGregor Groom, and finally Perfect Neighbor. You'll love these...

3.0 out of 5 stars could have been a 5 starer....
if it werent for a few errors in spelling and a few errors in actions, i would have indeed given this one five stars. playing the odds was a wonderful story and left me wanting more. tempting fate....i didnt enjoy this one and almost felt that i was wasting my time. i felt there could have been more character interaction and less about how diana was doubting herself...

4.0 out of 5 stars The romances of Serena and Caine, November 7, 2002
By

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Macgregors; Serena, Caine-(2 Books in One) (Mass Market Paperback)
In the first story in this book, Justin Blade is persuaded to take a cruise by his mentor, Daniel MacGregor. Little does he know that Daniel intends for him to meet his daughter Serena, who is a blackjack dealer on the ship. He does meet Serena and is instantly attracted to her, although he doesn't realize who she is. These two independent people do a lot of sparring, and fight the growing feelings of attraction that they feel. When Serena's life is put in danger, Justin realizes how much he cares for her. The second story, entitled Tempting Fate involves Serena's brother, Caine, and Justin's sister, Diana. Caine is a charming lawyer who is used to having his way with women. Diana, also an attorney, is wary of relationships because of past hurts she has suffered. Caine's father Daniel thinks that they would make a great match, but they are not convinced. Roberts' books are predictable and the ones I've read seem to follow the same pattern, but they have a wide appeal for those who enjoy this genre.

4.0 out of 5 stars Two Wonderful Romances, December 10, 2001
By
This review is from: The Macgregors; Serena, Caine-(2 Books in One) (Mass Market Paperback)
Nora Roberts' "Serena and Caine" contains the first two books of the MacGregor series. Both are wonderfully romantic and fun-filled visits with one of NR's most beloved families.

The first book, "Playing the Odds," begins Daniel MacGregors legacy of matchmaking. Comanche gambler Justin Blade meets the violet-eyed Serena working in the casino on his vacation cruise. These two are immediately and undeniably drawn to each other. Only later does Justin discover that this feisty woman is Rena MacGregor, daughter of his business associate Daniel MacGregor, who encouraged him to take the cruise in the first place. Serena tries to resist Justin's advances, but something about him keeps her coming back for more. Justin then offers Serena a job as manager of his Atlantic City hotel-casino and she can not turn down such an amazing offer. Serena and Justin just can't stay away from each other and a sizzling romance ensues. Justin and Serena are a perfect match for each other, and readers will fall in love with both of them. Of course, true love conquers all and these two overcome everything that stands in their way to be together.

In the second book, "Tempting Fate," Serena invites Justin's estranged sister, Diana, to visit them. Diana remembers Justin only as the big brother who abandoned her and left her to be raised by her cold and uncaring aunt. As a result, she keeps all her emotions buried deep inside and presents a very cool, detached woman to those around her. Serena's handsome brother, Caine, picks Diana up from the airport and is immediately fascinated by this cool and collected beauty. Caine and Diana have much in common, as they soon discover they are both lawyers and both attended Harvard. In fact, Diana has heard all about Caine MacGregor, the notorious playboy, and Caine must work at convincing Diana that his reputation is far exaggerated.
When Diana discovers the truth about what happened with her brother all those years ago, she realizes she has made a terrible mistake about him. All of Diana's realizations about her life bring her emotions to the surface, and it is Caine who she turns to for comfort. As Caine earns Diana's trust and admiration, he discovers the passionate and loving woman beneath her icy exterior. Diana and Caine are a lovely couple and readers will truly enjoy the romance they share.

Although "Serena-Caine" is a relatively light read, if you approach it as what it is meant to be, a fun and romantic escape, you will most definitely enjoy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars MacGregor Magic, January 12, 2006
By
selah38 (Union Bridge, MD United States) - See all my reviews
Reading the MacGregors for the first time, it is easy to see why Nora Roberts has had such a loyal fanbase from the start. As someone who started reading her books post-Silhouette, these re-releases are a treat.

Roberts has a way of writing memorable characters and families that you can't help but love. It doesn't matter if you can predict the outcome - (yes, they will most likely get together by the end) - getting there is so much fun.

In Playing the Odds we meet Serena MacGregor, genius and apple of her father's eye. She meets her match while dealing blackjack on a cruise ship. Justin Blade didn't want to go on a cruise - but when his good friend Daniel MacGregor pushes him to go, he does and is instantly drawn to Serena. This story has a great pace and as well as elements of suspense, which Roberts has since mastered.

Tempting Fate continues the story of Justin and Serena as well as her brother Caine. We also meet Diane Blade, Justin's estranged sister. Caine and Diana's pairing doesn't have the same depth as Serena and Justin's, but has even more passion. Seeing the families come together is satisfying and the reader will look forward to the next books in the MacGregor series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining, October 13, 2001

This review is from: The Macgregors; Serena, Caine-(2 Books in One) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was actually one of the last book in the MacGregor series in which I read. I found this book to be highly entertaining. Nora Roberts knows how to write stories that touch your heart, and she creates characters that you will never forget. This book establishes Daniel MacGregor as match-maker extraordinaire with his match of Serena and Justin. He makes certain that they cross paths, and of course once they do it's instant attraction. Serena is a strong-willed, independent woman. She knows what she wants and she goes after it. The same qualities are present in her brother Caine. He's confident and charming, and impossible for the weary Diane Blade to resist. These stories are amazing. They are ones you will never forget.

The MacGregor family is like no other. Many romances I've read immediately fly out of my mind. The characters just don't seem to stick. But Caine MacGregor and his father The MacGregor just seem to have capivated me. I can't get enough of this family. I hope Nora Roberts never stops unveiling new episodes to this wonderful continuing drama. Once you read this re-issue, you'll have to read the rest. I know -- because I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving "The MACGREGOR", July 9, 1999

This review is from: The Macgregors; Serena, Caine-(2 Books in One) (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm a newcomer to Nora Roberts and the MACGREGOR clan. I recently read the MacGregor Grooms, Serena-Caine, and the Perfect Neighbor. I was so engrossed in the story that I just couldn't put it down. I enjoyed everything about the story, how they met, how they almost broke up, I just loved it all.

I would really love to read the MacGregor Brides and Daniel-Alan stories. I felt like I was a part of the MacGregor Clan.

Looking forward to reading more of Nora Roberts stories.

Thank you Nora for writing such wonderful tales of romance.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL! I CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF THE MACGREGORS!, December 11, 1998

This review is from: The Macgregors; Serena, Caine-(2 Books in One) (Mass Market Paperback)
Nora Roberts has done it again. This time around we go back in time and get to know the love story of Justin and Serena Blade and Caine and Diana MacGregor. Talk about fantastic! I fell in love with them just as easily as I fell in love with their children in "The MacGregor Brides" and "The MacGregor Grooms". No wonder their kids turned out so great! My personal favorite out of the two in one, was Caine and Diana's story. Man, what a great book. You'll love it. I can't wait til the next installment of the clan comes out, "The MacGregors, Alan and Grant". I've already ordered it even though it hasn't yet been released. I can't wait! Also soon to be released is "The Perfect Neighbor" which goes into the Campbell family and "The MacGregors, Daniel and Ian" which includes probably the most important story of all that of Daniel and Anna MacGregor, the heads of the clan. Nora must want to kill me with the anticipation. Trust me, you'll love the MacGregors!

5.0 out of 5 stars once again, nora roberts creates two amazing stories, January 15, 2007
By
The MacGregors are definitely one of my favorite families from the world of Nora Roberts.

In this book, I find that it was the two main male characters, Justin and Caine, who pulled at me.

Justin Blade is prime specimen. The way he cared for Serena, and the way he seemed so human in his and Serena's story, "Playing the Odds" was absoulutely remarkable.

And Caine MacGregor showed a simple kindess in him that you just don't see in real life. Even when he could see that Diana was acting like a fool, he loved and respected her.

I recommend this book to any woman who would love to see these kind of men in real life.
