4.0 out of 5 stars Track Editor!, October 14, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Mach Rider [E] (Video Game)
Wow Mach Rider! This was a classic NES game that never got a great deal of fanfare because when it came to 'bike' games in the early days of the first Nintendo, Excite Bike reigned supreme. Also with a track editor and closer to motocross, excite bike was easily the more popular of the two games. But Mach Rider has a special place in my heart as well.

The game is basically about a guy on his bike battling an army of cars to the finish line. You can kind of choose what speed you want him to go but to have any chance you have to really max out his speed. You have to pass checkpoints on the way and have a couple of weapons to see you through. The funniest aspect of the game is that you can use the bike as a battering ram... you read that correctly... to bounce the cars 'out of bounds' or onto one of the guard-rails or slicks or into rocks where they'd blow up. The more you destroy, the better your score and if memory serves, even abilities. As each level goes by, the cars get a little tougher until finally they are faster than you (go long enough without dieing and some may show up on your level). I think they were black or dark purple.

The game is incredibly basic and relatively easy to finish; it will probably bore any of the current generation gamers to tears. Early Nintendo graphics (even for the NES) so it won't wow you there either. But what it did have that I got more into was a track editor where you could create and run through your own track. With QC standards what they were back then, you could conceivably make a track too long for the game. lol I wouldn't say you're missing a great deal by not playing it, but it does bring back some fond memories of early NES gaming and some of it's initial titles. Maybe most interestingly is that on the last level, the song appears to actually be somewhat inspired in it's bridge by an old Jobim song (Canta Mais), set to the glory of 8 bit gaming.

2.0 out of 5 stars It's ok., April 9, 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This game is pretty basic. Graphics, sound and overall fun. Nice to have in your collection, but it's something to cry yourself to sleep about if you don't play it. The mountains always remind me of big piles of poo. However, still somewhat fun to play once in a blue moon.
