WORTHY...,
By Hugh Jassman "Hugh" (SLC, UT USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Machine 15 (Audio CD)
overall a really well rounded record. i can really see the evolution of this band take place as i have been a fan for ten years. in my honest opinion, out of their seven studio albums (eight if you're including "melancholy collection"), this album would rank possibly 6th or 7th best. that's not to say it's awful. in fact, compared to most other music in the genre i'd have to say it's flawless. but it isn't up to snuff with their other works, as i feel it is a tad overproduced. i think that the band's longing to create another masterpiece like "pennybridge pioneers" is clouding their creative genius.
notable tracks include the hard hitting title track "machine 15" as well as "brand new game", a return to form and my personal favorite of the album, and the radio friendly "detox". "vicious circle" is another great song that happens to fly under the radar and shows how diverse their sound has become. if you're a longtime fan you would be a fool not to give it a go. i love the album, i listen to it constantly. the reason i have to rate it at only three stars is it's not their best work, some of the songs sound generic and the album as a whole sounds a bit overproduced. but definitely check it out.

the teflon record,

oh, the songs are here. they most definitely are.
it's just that they're buried under production so slick you could fry eggs on the damn thing and they'd slide right onto your life is a plate record. just not sure why this late in their career they felt they needed to make this sorta record. still a fun listen though.

Not sure what everyone else is listening to,

This is Millencolin's strongest album since the Life on a Plate/For Monkeys era. Agreed that the production is slick, but at this stage in their career, who's expecting a stripped down punk album ala Tiny Tunes? Not gonna happen. What they've done here is craft an albumful of clever, catchy tunes that never loses steam from start to finish. Not sure what the complaint is about the lyrics. Millencolin is Millencolin when it comes to lyrics. I absolutely love hearing the songs about their history such as "Machine 15" and "Brand New Game". There's too many other good songs to list my favourites.
Stellar work by a stellar band. Keep it going guys.

Millencolin has always been one of my favorite punk rock bands, but this CD is definately their worst. When I first got this CD I was super surprised to see that most all of the songs average a 3:30-4:00 minute compaired to their older releases which range from about 2:00-3:00 minutes or so. That being said, the songs on this album are much slower, repetative, and feature none of the speed, agression, or even heart-felt music as seen previously on releases up until this one.
The CD begins with the title track "Machine 15" which is a bouncy number that would have almost fit well on Kingwood asside from it's stupid lyrics. Overall I think this is one of the hardest songs on the album which being said is not much. 6/10 "Done is Done" is the second track which features much repetition of the chorus which isn't even very good. ALl in all the song drags on and on repeating the chorus until it finally ends. 4/10 "Detox" is the single of the album and it is also really stupid. It's another bouncy song but over all it repeats the chorus line several times too many which basically ruins everything good about the song. 3/10 "Viscious Circle" is probably one of the best songs on the CD as it features a pretty great chorus and some strong guitar playing. But again the chorus is repeated several times to many at the end. 8/10 "Broken World" this song is average, it features a kind of interesting chorus but kind of falls short. 5/10 "Come On" this song is really terrible. The music is really cheesy and repetative and the chorus lyrics are really stupid, "Come on, Come on, Come on, We gotta make a try. Dream on, Dream on, Dream on, it's easy as pie." Yeah I was like eww when I first heard the chorus. 2/10 "Centerpiece" I think in an attempt to keep with the "Machine 15" theme of having 15 songs on the album, this track is just noise that leads into the next track "Who's Laughing Now" This song has a decent chorus and is pretty fast compared to the rest of the CD but again nothing to write home about. 6/10 "Brand New Game" This is probably my favorite song of their Machine 15 album. It features lyrics of many of their past songs and kind of makes you think about how time has passed. I remember being in Middle School listen to good old Millencolin and this song is good and brings you back to those days kind of. The chorus is strong and the song names as lyrics is pretty original. 10/10 "Ducks and Drakes" This song annoys me a lot because of Nikola's voice when the song begins. The song kind of reminds me of an alternative styled song like something from maybe Franz Ferdinand or something, but for Millencolin I really don't like it too much. 4/10 "Turnkey Paradise" This song is pretty catchy actually, I really like the chorus even though I don't know what it means. The drumming is pretty good. 7/10 "Route One" This song is also kind of fast for this CDs standard but overall its kind of forgetable. 6/10 "Danger for Stranger" I really can't remember this song very well, I guess it may be kind of forgetable then. "Saved by Hell" Was originally going to be on Nikola Sarcevic's Solo album but felt it would be too hard for the album. I think this song has a pretty good chorus and is kind of interesting. I think that his voice is pretty good for this song but it's also repetative. 6/10 "Endpiece" This CD is pretty much just filler for about two minutes until the album ends. In my opinion, its really just a waste of CD time. So after listening to this CD I just feel super dissappointed. I've basically worn out the CDs for Life on a Plate, Same olf Tunes, Pennybridge Pioneers, For Monkeys, Home From Home, and Kingwood but this CD only really deserves a few listens in my oppinion which kind of sucks. I really wanted to like it but it's just way too poppy, songs drag on too long, and the production is just almost for this type of music too sickingly good, which is a shame. And a lot of the songs just aren't fun. The lyrics just kind of come across as whiney. I hope Millencolin's next album is better and maybe they will try to still be mature, but get back to their roots a little bit. I hope this reviw helps, its not a horrible CD but I wish it was better.

This album is definatley new and different for Millencolin, while I feel that it lacks the punch that some of the songs in kingwood had such as Moosemans Jukebox, this album gives the band a new face and will allow them to continue to produce records. If you are an old fan, I would stick with Pennybridge Pioneers and Life on a Plate if you're looking for the same old songs, but if you're willing to give change a change, pick this album up and listen to it!

So, even though I'd like to, I can't say that I loved the album (the 1st song is really good and sounded so promising though) but I still liked it. As a Millencolin fan for about 10 years I have to say that they are following their evolution into rock-oriented music. This time they went a little bit too further for me, but I still think it is a great Millencolin album.
Don't expect anything sounding like Life on a Plate, Pennybridge Pioners or any other album...

the new millencolin cd is definitely a change for those who enjoyed the more punk albums like pennybridge pioneers or the ska-laced millencolin that appears in tiny toons and life on a plate. however, in this case different doesn't necessarily mean bad. This cd has many catchy toons as well as some punk bits. The first two songs, machine 15 and done is done are both catchy and reminiscent of kingwood or home from home. Detox, the first single, is a new, more radio friendly millencolin, but the lyrics are funny and it mixes fairly well with the harder songs. some of the other good songs are brand new game, which if you listen to, you might recognize a few words, and who's laughing now. make sure to listen to centerpiece to give who's laughing now a cool build-up intro. Overall, some harcore punk fans might be put off by the more pop-punk sound, most fans will find something they like in machine 15.

Best in a long time,

Whoever rates this album low is an idiot, honestly. It blows Kingwood's production, sound quality, and song writing out of the water. It is on the same level with Home from Home in the sound department but the songs on that lacked some creativity. Not that they were bad; just a bit bland.
The songs on Pennybridge are unforgettable but the dynamics were very basic. And as far as their other 3 albums go, in my opinion they are punk classics, but this is not a punk album so I don't even want to compare them. Let's admit it. Since 2000 Millencolin has been a pop band with punk influences. Not a punk band. But that doesn't make them bad. I think it makes them better. The sound quality of this album is perfect, The songs are much more dynamic than ever before, and the melodies are unforgettable. If you're bitching about this album it's probably coz you want a punk album with all speed and angst with no dynamic. This is a pop album. Not pop in the sense of Butt-Rock bands like Three Doors Down or even in the sense that the songs were crafted only for the followers of some new fad going on and will die any minute now. It's a pop album in the sense that anyone listening to it will have the songs in their head and won't be bored by bland song structures. I think these songs are pop in the sense that anyone can tap their foot to them and enjoy them and will also stand the test of time. |
