Book Description

0070719381 978-0070719385 November 1, 1994
This practical, how-to guide offers field engineers, technicians, specialists and all others responsible for the installation, production and maintenance of equipment with proven methods for balancing machinery in order to reduce production loss, lower maintenance costs, and prevent costly downtime resulting from machinery failure. From the fundamentals of balancing to more advanced techniques, this reference demonstrates exactly how to solve any type of balancing problem on any piece of equipment. The book presents detailed coverage of the range of mass balancing methods in use today - including balancing with no instruments, the four-run method without phase, single-plane method, static-couple method, flexible rotor balancing and balancing nonrotating parts. In addition, it defines the basic balancing vocabulary and concepts, explores the history and future of the art of balancing, reviews important safety considerations and discusses balancing standards. Of particular interest are the hundreds of illustrations, real-world case studies and fully-worked examples that demonstrate how to apply the methods presented to troubleshoot any machinery balance problems.

Review

``...intended as a companion text for students, technicians, and engineers involved in a vibration workshop. The author, Victor Wowk, achieves his goal and more. ...this book is well organized and easy to read; for someone seeking a good grounding in the basics of modern vibration measurement and analysis, this is well worth a week of after-hours reading.'' From the Back Cover

Ninety percent of all machine failures are signaled months, even years, in advance by changes in machine vibrations. Some future failures are even predictable upon initial start-up. By understanding a machine's vibration "signature," you can diagnose, solve, and prevent problems, as well as reduce the cost of maintenance. Machinery Vibration: Measurement and Analysis will show you how to use state-of-the-art instrumentation, tranducers and fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectrum analyzers-to monito machine conditions using the vibration signature. This expert sourcebook includes: Case histories that illustrate strategies for solving machinery problems-from unblanaces and misalignments to vortex flow and turbulence. A diagnostic chart for assessing the severity of vibration. An overview of technology used in 'trending' machine performance. Guidelines for setting up a vibration monitoring system. Many illustrations throughout the book. Whether you're a plant or mechanical engineer, maintenance engineer, facility manager, mechanic, or technician, this excellent book will enable you to troubleshoot mechanical problems and improve machinery performance. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good reference, but requires supplementary volumes, August 24, 1999
By A Customer
This is a good book to get started with machinery analysis, but be careful since it leaves many of the detailed analyses and remediation techniques to Mr. Wowk's other books. For example, the Amazon publisher's review erroneously indicates that this book contains the procedure for strobe-less 4-trial balancing. It does NOT - that procedure is in Mr. Wowk's follow-on book on Balancing. But as a SET of books Mr. Wowk's texts seem very thorough and up-to-date.

A great book for anyone interested in basic vibration analysis. Good coverage of vibration theory and application. Included are case histories that help demonstrate how to apply vibration techniques. If you want a better understanding of machinery vibration with a focus on real world application this is a best buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overall Best Vibration Book Yet, October 4, 2000
By
As a practicing mechanical engineer and vibration analyst for over eight years, I have found Mr.Wowk's book the best yet. In particular, I have found this book to have a good index and sensibly ordered so information can be obtained quickly. Also, Mr.Wowk has smartly avoided extensive mathmatical discussions in his book and focused the content towards common problems and solutions. To improve his book I would recommend more case histories and more extensive content on topics such as electrical problems and bearing faults. Overall it is the best book of its type I have read yet.
