1.0 out of 5 stars WHY IS THERE NO ZERO RATING?
The stories in this book have no plot, all they basically are is a bunch of sex scenes strung together. And there is something seriously wrong with S&M. Pain is not supposed to feel good. And as for the Victorian-era story "the Finishing School": If you want a Victorian story with a plot, save your time and energy for the real writers like Dickens.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic of bedtime reading, December 8, 1999
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
The trouble with what literary people like to call erotica and what the rest of us know as porn is that either it's terribly hifalutin and trails off into a row of dots just before it gets good, or else it's dismally badly written. The great virtue of Macho Sluts is that Pat Califia is, apart from anything else, a damn good writer who doesn't smear Vaseline on the lens, as it were. I'm not the only person to testify that you don't have to be into S&M, or a lesbian, or even a woman, to enjoy this book. (Though if you can't imagine what it might like to be one or all of the above, then you won't find it very rewarding - like the person below who claimed that it was all sex scenes. Well, duhh.) The Calyx of Isis is one of the most extraordinarily arousing things ever written; truly, the hormones have reason, of which the stated sex on your birth certificate knows nothing. I wouldn't want to advise anybody not to read this book - but please, with a title like Macho Sluts, you should at least have some idea of what you're getting into.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite the eye/heart/mind opener!, August 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
This was my BDSM "coming out" book. No, MACHO SLUTS, isn't for the faint of heart. I first read it many years ago and was both shaken and thrilled to have my ideas about what constitutes normality, pleasure, pain and love so thoroughly brought into question. It was a riveting read. I had trouble putting it down even when I was finished. To this day I will pick up my ragged copy and re-read it. Again, it's NOT for the faint of heart -- or for those who are dyed-in-the-wool vanilla. If your mind is closed and your world is small, this book will scare the s--- out of you. Personally, I loved it. It's one of my all-time favorites.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pat Califa goes to the Edge to help make room for all of us., February 20, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
It's a classic, it always was a classic, it opened up a genre. When first I saw Macho Sluts just the title appalled me. I'm a control freak and I get very formal behind my glasses. I could not put those two words together. You can be a butch. You can be a fem. You can think you are both. But MACHO AND SLUT, it was tough, tough in 1990. But when I picked up Macho Sluts, I didn't stopped reading it for days. {And I believe, off the record I orgasmed 3 times} Damn good book. It was the first ever, S AND M compilation of stories by one woman, and breaking taboos. (not a female writer pretending to be a man in order to be published) Pat Califia is a sincere believer that we can cross all gender and sexual lines, when it's done well. There is no need to stick within our boundaries Submissives can be dominant, gays can act like heterosexuals, women can be fucked like men. Life is good. Books don't get much better than Macho Sluts. It covers so many topics. When I talk to my friends, there's always one that they just couldn't take and it's always a different one. For everyone there's one story that's too much and one that is perfect. If you're like me, you're going to buy copies and send them to your friends. Stephanie Locke

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the timid!, May 11, 2000

Pat Califia's intense collection of lesbian erotica starts with a bang and does not slow down until the end of the final story. These are stories of possible realities, not fantasy or science fiction which I usually prefer and yet the characters and plots were so wonderfully interwoven with passioniate SM and sex that I found myself enjoying most of the stories. Definately a collection I return to every now and then.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of heart, rewarding for the right person, October 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
Most sex fiction is either too crude to be transporting or too highbrow to be sexy. Califia establishes a new benchmark in her work, which is achingly hot and filled with memorable images and characters. Some material in Macho Sluts is frightening, some hilarious, but all of it is lovingly crafted in the spirit of seeking and giving joy and asserting one's right to use one's body as an instrument of pleasure. No matter what your level of experience in the S & M world, you will find something to challenge and surprise you. While Califia's primary audience is women, I loved it from the first sentence despite my Y chromosome. NOTE: DON'T READ THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU'RE WILLING TO HAVE YOUR DEFINITIONS OF PLEASURE AND PAIN EXPLORED AND CHALLENGED IN SOMETIMES TROUBLING WAYS. IT'S DEFINITELY NOT FOR KIDS, OR FOR GROWNUPS WHO AREN'T CONFIDENT AND ADVENTUROUS.

4.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't sure I'd like this one, May 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
I bought this book and thought, "Well, this will be ... different." I'd never read SM porn before. Honestly, the first read-through, I thought, "This is interesting but it really bothers me." Now it's my favorite bedtime reading. If you are tired of lesbian "erotica" that somehow manages to leave out the sex, you'll like this book. There are lots of detailed, long sex scenes, and if one is not your cup of tea, another will be. It also had a good variety of scenarios, and each one is well-written. Even if you aren't interested in SM, Pat Califia is the best lesbian-porn writer out there, and you probably will find something you like in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating subject, October 23, 2006
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
I would never have bought this book but I read a romance novel with the two main characters heavily into S&M - one to extreme violence. I couldn't understand the appeal of wanting to dominate or needing to be dominated to the extent of violence, demeaning subjugation, pain and blood letting. So I searched out a book that would be well written on the subject and was told this was the best of the best.

This book is well written, extremely intense and edgier then erotica in most books. The hard core s/m porn and collection of very rough and sometimes bloody stories isn't what I was actually looking for but it does substantiate that the audience is out there.

I am hoping to find a book that will help me understand why going to the extreme of domination and submission isn't perceived as a health issue.

I rated the book 5 stars as I imagine this is probably one of the best books out there based on the quality of writing.

Make sure to read the 20 page introduction, it grabs you from the opening sentence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank you, Pat!, July 8, 2006
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
This was the "Mr. Benson" for us leatherdykes. I can't tell you how many of us used to use character names as our secret codes for what we were into and what we were looking for. Hard core s/m porn written by someone who has really done this stuff - and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reading this book set Me on the path to becoming a ProDomme., March 14, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Macho Sluts: Erotic Fiction (Paperback)
This is such a classic. If you like BDSM, lesbians, Pat Califia or well-written AND hot erotica, then you'll love Macho Sluts. All of the stories in this collection are excellent, and most of them are surprising in some way.

The best story in this collection is "The Hustler" which will make you cream your panties while you worry about the direction feminism and our government are headed. Yes, I'm serious. And anyone in the life, especially anyone who has lost a Mistress or a mentor to the streets, will identify with the characters and their motivations.

"Pat Califia's writing is unbelievably erotic, even when she simply describes someone walking across a room. Given that she describes much hotter stuff in this book than walking, it is incredible.
