Book Description

9 and up4 and upWonders of the World Book

The story of the rise of the Inkas and the building of the great city of Machu Picchu is described in this book. The city is as astonishing as were its builders. Set in a remote, inaccessible area of the high Andes, this breathtaking city was never found by the Spanish Conquistadors and remains an untouched example of Inka genius.

Wonders of the World series

The winner of numerous awards, this series is renowned for Elizabeth Mann's ability to convey adventure and excitement while revealing technical information in engaging and easily understood language. The illustrations are lavishly realistic and accurate in detail but do not ignore the human element. Outstanding in the genre, these books are sure to bring even the most indifferent young reader into the worlds of history, geography, and architecture.

"One of the ten best non-fiction series for young readers."

Review

Once again, Mann has written an engaging and accessible introduction to one of humankind's great architectural achievements. (School Library Journal 2000)

Nonfiction Honor Book, 2000 (VOYA 2000)

[Starred review:] Unlike some nonfiction, this really answers questions the readers want to know. (Booklist )

3.0 out of 5 stars Graphics were more bloody than expected, August 4, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Machu Picchu: The story of the amazing Inkas and their city in the clouds (Wonders of the World Book) (Paperback)
While this book has great info, I actually tossed it because a few of the illustrations were too graphic. For example, a young person with a knife embedded in their body, including blood. I'm disappointed because I feel it was unnecessary, even though it is historical. I know most people probably won't have a problem with such graphics, but if your kids are the sensitive types, be fore-educated.
