Shows good order of operations from scanning to separations,

I did desktop publishing for a few years but I've never had to scan in the photographs myself. I'm taking a Photoshop for Photographers class. The text we use is Adobe Photoship 5.5 for Photographers written by Martin Evening. The text is very good for photographers but I took the class so that I can scan in photos for newlsetters. I bought this book The Macintosh Designer's Guide because it explains the process, from scanning through separations. I am concerned that some of the information may be outdated because it was written in 1996. The photoshop version used in the book is an older version. It doesn't have the tools that Photoshop 5.5 has. This is the only book I've been able to locate that tells me how to get the file ready for the printer. I just hope the information in this book is still accurate!
