2.0 out of 5 stars True to his lyrics
A friend was once volunteering at a toy drive in Los Angeles for poor and needy families. Mack 10 rolls up with a couple of his 'peeps' and says, "Yo, my homeboys paid fo' this." He and his 'peeps' proceeded to take armfuls of toys and walked off. Other volunteers didn't know what to do and weren't sure if what he said was true, so they just watched it happen...

Before Mack 10 was tempted by money and commercial success, he certainly could kick some dope rhymes. His debut had a couple weaknesses but is mostly quite good. The hit single "Foe Life" was an instant club hit, and was produced by Ice Cube with a funky saxophone loop and Mack 10 introducing himself to the world. "Wanted Dead" is also a classic gangsta track with a late night sort of feel to it, and Mack 10 tears this song up. "On Them Things" is kind of an abrasive track but sounds really good, and has the standard gangsta sound to it. "Chickenhawk" is another tight track with booming bass and some funky vocals. "Here Comes The G" is an absolute classic, with a nice, funky bounce and laid-back feel. Mack also tore this song up. "Westside Slaughterhouse" also is a classic, and features WC and Ice Cube, and Cube takes a shot at Common Sense to spark the beef they had (Common lyrically obliterated Ice Cube). WC also had some of the coldest battle lines on this vicious track. Also, there are some nice tracks like "Armed And Dangerous" which has a neighborhood, summertime feel to it, and "Mozi-Wozi" is a nice sex track, about a hotel with a nice, slow beat added to it. "Mack Ten's The Name" is Mack 10 telling all fakes in the game that they better change their name to Mack 11 because Mack 10 is HIS name. Also, Kay-Dee connects with Mack very nicely on "H.O.E.K.", another good track about females. There are a couple pointless interludes, and one extremely wack song in "Ten Million Ways" which has a repeatitive and boring beat and hook. That lowers the overall rating but still this is a worthy and impressive debut. Excellent production came from Ice Cube, Rhythm D, and others.

This is definitely an album to buy if you like Mack 10, or even if you hate his new music, you have to give credit to this as a worthy listen. Mack 10 slowly evolved into a more commercial artist and his hunger and creativity seemed to leave along with it, but he was in top form on his self-titled debut, his finest hour. I recommend this.

5.0 out of 5 stars First Time's The Charm, October 9, 2000

Mack really brought it with his first one. He had the aggressive hype voice which he sadly traded in for a mellow type voice on his future albums and he had awesome beats on this one. (better than ice cube's, w.c.'s mid 90 albums and on the same level as the westside connection album). Only Jay-Z and Prodigy sound good with the mellow voice, 'nuff rappers try and sound like them but sound boring. Perfect example being Mack 10. He should go back to the high energy flow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mack 10, July 13, 2000
This review is from: Mack 10 (Audio CD)
With the self-titled album, Mack 10 sets the world up for what was to come with Westside Connection's hardcore, multi-platinum classic album, "Bow Down". The album is a prime example of the music that was coming from the West Coast in the Mid 90's. This album was obviously Mack Dime's best, coming out w/ mediocre sophomore & junior albums, it shows Mack 10 does have skill & talent, & can show it.

2.0 out of 5 stars True to his lyrics, September 16, 2011

A friend was once volunteering at a toy drive in Los Angeles for poor and needy families. Mack 10 rolls up with a couple of his 'peeps' and says, "Yo, my homeboys paid fo' this." He and his 'peeps' proceeded to take armfuls of toys and walked off. Other volunteers didn't know what to do and weren't sure if what he said was true, so they just watched it happen.

Mack 10 raps ghetto, presents himself as ghetto, and he essentially steals toys from kids. Way to go, you hardcore dirty POS. You are a true inspiration for all who want to amount to nothing in life. Go smoke your crack and die somewhere. The world is better off without people like Mack Douche.

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Mack 10 (Audio CD)
1995 was a seminal year for hip hop, a year of game-changing releases from both coasts that further expanded the genre and directed the path it would take in years to come. By this point Ice Cube, a godfather of West Coast and gangsta rap from his days in N.W.A., was four solo albums and a few blockbuster movies deep and had begun to develop his own artists. Chief among the MCs in his stable was a certain Inglewood rapper named Mack 10, whose self-titled debut arrived in '95. Featuring production from Cube's tried-and-true buddies Crazy Toones, Dr. Jam, Madness 4 Real, and The 88X Unit, "Mack 10" is a simple and straightforward album of West Coast funk where Mack 10 impresses as a memorable MC far from just another bandana-sporting gangsta on the California rap landscape.

"Mack 10" is 48 consistent minutes of bass-heavy, trunk-rattling gangsta funk, often boasting rich `70s samples and clever arrangements. The beats are top-notch and a perfect canvas for Mack 10's brand of unapologetic rap. A sneering, gun-toting criminal, Mack 10 is a gangsta to the core and won't let the listener forget it, but he's still tons of fun to listen to. And while subsequent efforts would highlight weaknesses as his approach got old, on his debut he is fresh and furious. While certainly not a lyrical or conceptual rapper, Mack 10 had his own sound and style that was memorable enough to spawn numerous imitators, narrating the life of an Inglewood G almost to the point of self-parody. Angry and original, his music is bass-heavy, mechanical and heavy on digital elements but stays upbeat and funky as well.

Opening with the classic throw-it-up West Coast anthem "Foe Life," Mack 10 makes an impression as a powerful, next-generation `90s gangsta who would sport Chucks and pistol-whip you in the name of feeding his baby daughter. The unforgettable chorus and thumping beat make this song pretty timeless. But the hits keep coming. "Wanted Dead" is a frenetic robbery narrative, and the second single "On Them Things" flips a resounding Rick James sample to brilliant success as Mack raps about the West Coast car culture. "Chicken Hawk" is a highlight, with a superb beat and tales of a day in the life of "a chicken hawk, searching for a chicken." "Here Comes the G" is an appealing, light, catchy number, and this album also contains the first recorded appearance of the game-changing West Coast supergroup Westside Connection on "West Side Slaughterhouse" with a furious Ice Cube and WC. Still my favorite song is "Mozi-Wozi," a song that hilariously samples Earth Wind & Fire's "Devotion" in a profile of late-night motel encounters. While some of the deep tracks aren't quite as unforgettable as others, they all boast strong production and performances.

"Mack 10" is a great album that's stood the test of time and still is tons of fun after nearly 15 years. Mack 10 would go on to a long career, but after countless labels, beefs, supporting acting roles, and the Hoo-Bangin' nation, this still stands out among his very best material. Love it or hate it, this is spirited West Coast gangsta rap at its purest, and I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Westcoast Gangsta Rap, June 13, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mack 10 (Audio CD)
This CD really fits into the mid 90's classics. My favorite track on this CD is "foe life" followed by "H-o-e-k". "Foe life" brings back the memories back at parties. Also I like the mack 10 album "Based on a true story". The album "The recipe" is not as good as the first 2.
