The $hort Dawg People Once Remembered (Rating: 8 out of 10),
By
This review is from: The Mack of the Century... Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
You would think that as many albums that Todd Shaw aka Too $hort has out (about 16 I think), and as many years he's been rhymimg (at least 20), he'd have enough hits to have atleast a double disc of a "Greatest Hits" album. Unfortunately this isn't the case here. Die hard Too $hort fans will be dissapointed with this here. Don't get me wrong Short Dog was one of the greatest rappers in the game. (Notice how I said "was"). This right here is Too $hort from the "Born To Mack" (1988) album to his tenth album "Gettin It (Album #10)" (1996). Basically before his renegoiciation of his contract with Jive Records aka his retirement. In this case I find the collage of albums on the cover to be misleasing because they show all of the albums he's made forming a picture of him.
There are a lot of gems on here, showcasing his hit singles from his early albums. Some of my favorites are "The Ghetto" from "$hort Dawg Is In The House" (1990), his more popular single "Life Is Too $hort" from the album "Life Is..."(1988), and "I'm A Playa" and "BJ Betty" from what remains my favorite album "Get In Where You Fit In" (1993). Most of these hit singles were classics. The only one I can think of whats missing from here is the song "I Want To Be Free" from the "Shorty The Pimp" (1992) album. You'll notice the hit singles he's released back then and what ever the heck he's been putting out after his retirement, expanded on more subject matter. Most of the time he's talking about strip clubs and women nowadays. Even though he did back in the day, he also rhymed about social political subjects, like "The Ghetto" he rhymed about how urban ran down neighborhoods full of drugs and murdering had a reflection of Oakland. Unfortunately he would abandon the funky Oakland sounding music and moved to some town called Atlanta, and began settling for the generic production from Lil Jon and Jazze Pha (Ant Banks would toss him a few beats here and there). If you gotten into Too Short anytime after 1999, and want to know what he's really capable of, snatch this up here. Then go pick up some of his earlier albums. To tell you the truth: I'd rather take 13 funky tracks of Too $hort's Greatest Hits before his retirement than anything he's made after retirement, because 90% of that material has been straight garbage. I got much love for $hort Dawg for his 20 or so years in the game and 16 albums (name any other rapper who holds both titles), but to tell you the truth, I believe he's hanging on by a thread. Peace!

Considering that this is Too Short, I thought this was a sub-par "Greatest Hits",

There should have been more hits... I mean this is Short Dawg!! About 40% of the songs were Hot To Me! But, you be the judge! Definitely worth $3.00, nothing over $5, including shipping...
