Highly Recommended. Extensive coverage of mixers in general,
By Rodrigo (NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mackie Compact Mixers - Edition 2.1 (Paperback)
Although the book focuses on specific Mackie models, I would recommend the book for mixer users in general. I have a Tascam mixer and the manual is not very thorough. The book covers in detail different configurations, the specific functions and setup information. I would give it a 5 stars if I actually had one of the models that the book covers. I went back to my Tascam manual and a lot of the info finally made sense.I've a newbie in the whole music scene and I've been looking for a book like this for a while. It definetly did its job in covering the basics very well. The book is very organized, starting with explanations of specific mixer functions in detail, how to use this functions and different applications and configurations. I wish Tascam made something like this....

Best Beginner's Guide to Mixing I've Seen,
By The Dealer (Lansdowne, PA United States) - See all my reviews

and not just for Mackie owners, either. I owned a Behringer board and I found the Behringer manual to be largely incomprehensible. After reading Rudy's book, my board finally made sense. I also went out and got a Mackie, because I could see how much superior it would be for my style of music. Trubitt writes simply, and the diagrams and visual aids are first rate. I would recommend this book as a beginner's guide to mixing no matter what board the person owns, because almost all of what Trubitt teaches is relevant to any mixing board. (By the way, the Mackie manuals are also excellent -- the best in the business).

Essentially The Best "How To" Book Around,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mackie Compact Mixers - Edition 2.1 (Paperback)
Trubitt is a master in writing this "how to" book on learning to operate a Mackie mixer. Even though the author acknowledges that the information in the book applies to other brands of mixers, he gears his information around specific types of Mackie models.
For the beginner, this book is a must. For others, it is a great refresher course on how to operate various mixer models. Trubitt's ability to write in easily understandable everyday language (with some humor added-in) makes this the best "how to" book that I have ever read -- regardless of subject matter. Simply put: Do not hesitate to purchase this book!

Provides details way beyond what the Mackie Manual serves up.
Without this I would not have used my CFX12 MkII to it's potential. In short - a Great investment!

I spent more time around video production facilities than I did audio recording. So when I was faced with a Mackie mixer to rig into a home studio, I was baffled.
In video, the signal travels ONE WAY through all the gear in facility. It's easy. OUT from this device, IN to the next one. Could do it in my sleep. But in audio, signals they can be routed out of (and back into) the mixer several ways, even several times, and mixed in various ways at each stage before you get to the final output. You can get it hooked up and have no sound comes out because one of those little buttons is set incorrectly. If you can't figure out which one, you can lose sleep, hair, and money. Buy this book. It will explain and diagram most everything you can imagine. You'll understand how to send that signal, where to find that signal, and how to control that signal. It's in there, somewhere, after all. You will sleep better. You will keep your hair. You'll get jobs done on time.

Well worth the investment,
By Scott Regan (Andover, MA, US) - See all my reviews

This is a well written and organized book. Given the publishing date I was tempted to order another more recently published book. I was glad I didn't. The book is a good balance between "concepts" and "applications specific to a range of Makie Mixers. The author's ability to present concepts clearly and his ability to build on the foundation of fundamentals was impressive. Add to this that he included some humor to the mix (pun intended) made this book even more impressive. I learned a lot from this master teacher and will continue to use the book as a reference.
Well done!

I am the Worship Leader at my church, and the Sound Ministry is part of my responsibility. We have a Mackie SR24-4 board, which I have a decent handle on, but since I am playing on the team during worship services, I rely on Sound Guys to run the sound. The problem is that they are volunteers from our congregation and have no Tech experience or education. I have read through this book to determine if I want to order one for the whole team, which I do. This is an excellent resource and I believe will get our Sound Guys over the hump on mixing board knowledge. The board is very complicated looking, but this book breaks it down into easy to understand sections. I learned some things reading the book and I have done sound for several years in and out of church.
I highly recommend this to anyone with a Mackie mixer or even a different brand, because the concepts are the same. The Author even points this out and give the common and not so common names for different knobs, buttons, sliders, and groups. I will likely search out more books by this Author.

Great Guide For All Sound Reinforcement Folks,
This review is from: Mackie Compact Mixers - Edition 2.1 (Paperback)
I own the earlier version of this book and the general chapters at the beginning and the end are priceless. The specific setups for various Mackie mixers are great and could easily be adapted to any brand mixer. This book could easily be expanded to cover more microphone basics and the use of other outboard effects but then it wouldn't just be a "compact mixer" handbook.
As an experienced DJ and sound man, I constantly go back to this book...something sinks in better every time I read it!

If you own a compact Mackie Mixer and are new to using mixers in a live sound environment, this book is for you. I play in a band and had purchased a Mackie CFX16-MKII. Mixing duties had always been someone elses job with previous bands so when I purchased my board I only knew the very basics of interconnection and how to use the board. This book does a great job of explaining every feature of my board, what it does, how it affects my signal and how it can be used. If your confused about balanced versus unbalanced connections, the purpose of inserts, sends and returns, what busses are for and how to use them, and suggested settings for live sound applications, then this book will answer all your questions. It is not intended to cover effects and equipment that can be attached to the board, and how to set those devices up, but does tell you where to insert or to send/return to those devices from your board. While this book covers in detail all features of many Mackie models, it covers enough theory and explains what standard devices on the board are well enough that what is learned could be easily transferred to other vendors mixing boards. I highly recommend this book.
