5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful yet simple, May 16, 2006

This review is from: Mackie Tracktion 2 Digital Audio Software
Tracktion is different than other audio recording packages by design. It simplifies your workflow down to a single screen, allowing you to record your music quickly and efficiently.

It doesn't sacrifice power, however. Once you get used to how it works, you'll uncover an enormous toolbox of tools and features that provide incredible flexibility without breaking the bank.

It took me an hour or two to get my mind wrapped around Tracktion. I've recorded with many different DAR packages, and each has advantages and disadvantages. But Tracktion is my favorite for doing real work: it's stable, fast, simple, and powerful.

Download the demo from the Mackie site to see if it works for you. Just be aware that you will actually have to USE the software to understand why it's such an incredible value.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent UI design and functionality, September 29, 2006
This review is from: Mackie Tracktion 2 Digital Audio Software
I've used lots of media production software over the years -- going back to Macromedia Soundedit 16, Director, Photoshop, Illustrator, various 3D modeling packages, and more recently Reason and Sonar. This product, Tracktion, stands up strongly among them all in terms of design and functionality.

User interface design is a subtle art, and it can make or break an application. It doesn't matter how many features you pack into an application, if the UI is awkward, confusing, inconsistent, creates extra work, and/or fights you every step of the way, even the most feature-rich application will be next to useless. It can make the difference between spending an afternoon in frustrating struggle, or spending an afternoon laying down tracks and getting s**t done. Most of the products I've mentioned fall into the second category and provide usable, well organized interfaces (with a couple sad exceptions). Tracktion is definitely among the best.

One thing to note here is that you will not find any shading effects, realistic-looking knobs and sliders, or metallic surfaces. This UI is built from flat areas of color with simple outlines. But this isn't about looks. It's about functionality. As Han Solo said, "she may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts."

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Program, May 12, 2007

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Mackie Tracktion 2 Digital Audio Software
After wearing out two sets of heads on my tape-based digital multitrack recorder, it was time to move to tapeless recording. I've been running a Mackie mixer for years. It's been very reliable, and the tech support was excellent, so I gave Tracktion a serious look. The reviews were good, and I wanted something that was built for musicians, not for computer jockeys.

Amazon's price was too good to pass up, so I ordered the program. It arrived promptly with regular shipping. I had help with the installation from a computer tech, and it went very smoothly.

This is a very deep program, but the basics are easy. I've hit a few snags along the way, but Mackie's tech support has been excellent. My various emails and the one phone call I made to them were all answered promptly. (Initially, I also emailed the software distributor for tech help, but I never heard back from them.)

My only complaint--and it's pretty minor--is that the plug-ins included in the program are not covered by the included manuals. You've got to get the info on those online from Mackie's website, but it's free. Still there are a lot of them--multi-band EQ's, various compressors, choruses, delays, guitar amp modeling--the list is pretty long.

Overall this is an excellent value, and I'm very happy with my purchase.
