4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring story of family commitment and courage, April 19, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Macrobiotic Miracle: How a Vermont Family Overcame Cancer (Hardcover)
"Macrobiotic Miracle," tells the story of a Vermont family who refuses to let the medical community give their mother a death sentence. Virginia Brown, a nurse, was told she had six months to live, provided she undergo surgery and chemotherapy to combat fourth stage melanoma. She chose, instead, at the advice of her son, David and his wife, Deborah, to seek the help and advice of Misho Kushi, a macrobiotic foods guru. What follows is amazing. Mrs. Brown, in her late fifties, begins to heal within two weeks of following a carefully proscribed and prepared diet. However, this is more than a story of how diet can overcome cancer. This is a story of a strong, united family made up of six children and their respective mates, and Virginia's husband, Frank, who totally embraced macrobiotics and watched their mother come back to life. I believe that it was the children's commitment, as much as the magic contained in healthy food, that restored Virginia's health. Furthermore, this book is the story of a Vermont family whose collective visions took them on an arduous, but exciting journey into building a Utopian community in a place called Kingsland Bay, a venture that was finally sold to the state for lack of capital, but for the seven years that it operated, it affected the lives of untold people. This is a story that needs to be heard, and, furthermore, a story that needs a second part, for undoubtedly the saga continues.

This review is from: Macrobiotic Miracle: How a Vermont Family Overcame Cancer (Hardcover)
I read this book while trying to find a way to cure myself of an autoimmune disease. All the medical community could offer me was massive doses of steriods which probably wouldn't work anyway. I found the book very helpful and inspiring. I followed the macrobiotic diet and within 6 months I was disease free. Try it. What have you got to lose?
