As a stock market investor, I'd been looking for something that would give me an integrated knowledge of real-world macroeconomics. I had taken macroeconomics in college many years ago, and had, of course, been following Federal Reserve policy for years since -- because of the effect of Fed policy on stocks. And I had also recently done further reading of specific authors like Keynes. But when I looked for something that would tie all the pieces together, all I could find were texts that stressed theory over reality -- books that forgot that "the difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than it is in theory". Until this one.

Microeconomics in Context covers orthodox theory, which is necessary to understand what economists are talking about. But then it goes on to describe the limitations of those theories. E.g., why Ricardo's Theory of Comparative Advantage fails so often, why GDP is such a terrible measure of anything useful, why the BLS definition of "employed" seriously overcounts the number of people that common sense says are employed....

The authors also give some space to monetarism, Keynesian thinking, and ecological economics. And there's a quick overview of microeconomics. There's some algrebra involved in the discussion of concepts like Aggregate Demand, but the discussion can be followed even by mathphobes. The authors specifically avoided using any calculus.

The writing style is very readable, unlike a lot of economics books I've seen. Everything is explained clearly, so no prior knowledge of economics should be needed.

I just completed a completely online college level class in macroeconomics that used this book as the text. I also purchased the digital version from the publisher that allows 6 months of access.

The textbook has a personal feel and seems to be rather unique because it emphasizes ecological economics. The prerequsited for the class I just completed was "micro", which I had not completed, but I am signed up for the Fall and expect the companion volume will be used. For the class, the "Aplia" website provided weekly quizes from material in the text, and online group discussion were also performed.
