Book Description

The market leader for the full-year organic laboratory, this manual derives many experiments and procedures from the classic Feiser lab text, giving it an unsurpassed reputation for solid, authoritative content. The Williamson/Minard/Masters manual's flexible mix of macroscale and microscale options for most experiments allows instructors to save on the purchase and disposal of expensive, sometimes hazardous organic chemicals. Macroscale versions can be used for less costly experiments, giving students experience working with conventionally sized glassware. The Fifth Edition of the manual includes new experiments that stress greener chemistry, revised content in computational chemistry, and more information on laboratory safety procedures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the O-Chem Student!, November 2, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I received this required text in prime shape from Amazon.com, first. Amazon always does such a wonderful job of getting you the product you need in good shape when you need it. The product itself? Very good explanations of how the glassware goes together, what to do, how to do it, and all with a good explanation of WHY. WHAT you are doing, WHY you are doing it, and HOW it works are chief among the reasons I like the explanations of the experiments. It does not give TOO MUCH away, however. You do still have to perform the experiments and come to a conclusion as to what the UNKNOWN was, if that happens to be the case, and other mysteries such as that, but in terms of learning, it is excellent! And the experiments are neatly divided into the Macroscale and the Microscale procedures. This is obvious, but it should be in this case. Great resource for O-Chem students!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Organic Lab Book, February 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Macroscale and Microscale Organic Experiments (Hardcover)
We used this in my organic chem I lab course. The directions were clear, the diagrams were helpful, and I liked the way the book familarized the student with the glassware used in o chem (unlike my new o chem II book which does not!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Lab Text, August 11, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Macroscale and Microscale Organic Experiments (Hardcover)
The experiments are presented first with a look at the theory behind them, reactions are listed, mechanisms are drawn if need be (not as in-depth as your lecture textbook), and the procedures are laid out with little to no ambiguity. The book lists lists out all the instruments and glassware you will be using throughout the laboratory experience at the beginning of the book with pictures for each one to ensure you have them present in your lab equipment. The experiments are divided up by some common theme between 5-6 of them and none of them are terribly difficult to perform, which is good, because this allows you to focus more on the theory and understanding the reaction than getting the highest yield you can. As long as you don't spill anything or goof off, your yields will always be fine (in case your school grades by % yield).
