4.0 out of 5 stars Access Point May 5, 2014
Format:Audio CD
This is the most overtly jazz offering from Mr. Cline in quite a while.

With the assertive playing of new Nels Cline Singers bassist Trevor Dunn, Macroscope finds the drums and guitars falling into groovy orbit on many songs resulting in an almost jammy feel. In fact on many occasions I found myself thinking of Carlos Santana circa Caravanserai. Cyro Battista's complex and cyclical percussion adds to the Latin and/or New Orleans funk feel that spiderwebs across Cline's usual pyrotechnic array of sounds.

While I generally prefer Cline's more astringent, Thurston-esque knotty avant-garde outings (such as The Trio recordings, Draw Breath, Inkling, etc.), I don't mind the modal melodicism of Macroscope. The album is dense and rewarding, perhaps an easier inroad for listeners coming from the jazz end of the spectrum, and hearkening to Cline's latter work with Stephen Perkins' Banyan (i.e. Live At Perkins' Palace).

The accessibility is really the only strike against Macroscope that I can level. Toward Macroscope's end things do get a bit weirder, but the rocking out is generally reigned in making this a fairly restrained outing from the Singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! June 17, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This album is the best thing I have heard from Nels Cline on record so far (and I have a lot of Nels records and I've seen him live a million times, going all the way back to the New Music Mondays at the Alligator Lounge in Santa Monica). Nels is a genius on guitar and shows it here on every track. Trevor done is one of my favorite bass players and this is the best thing I have heard him on since Mr. Bungle. And Scott Amendola is always awesome. Saw them live in Oakland last year and this album has the energy and brilliance of that night captured and ready to enjoy over and over again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather tame May 16, 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The only track I dig the whole way through is "Hairy Mother" - pity the whole album couldn't have maintained this level. I think Draw Breath is the Singers' best album and Rova & Nels Cline Singers - The Celestial Septet is also excellent.

For those new to Nels Cline's away from Wilco, there is much much better music available than Macroscope: as well as "Draw Breath" and the one with Rova, try any of the following:

"Veil" by B B & C, "Silencer", "Destroy All Nels Cline", "Chest", "Sad", "The Inkling", "Nothing Makes Any Sense", "Angelica", "Ground", "Myriad" (by Greg Bendian's Interzone), "Pillow Wand", "Interstellar Space Revisited", "Buried On Bunker Hill", "The Entire Time", "Ash and Tabula Vol III", ... the list goes on.

Edit: not everything on this partial list was produced by Nels - most are collaborations and one was produced and written by Greg Bendian but all contain excellent contributions by Nels and others.
