mac computers for oldsters,

I felt this publication is a bit out of date. I have a brand new Mac and the book talks about help as it was given some years back. Book is not much use to me.

A Mac "missing manual" for beginners,

New to Mac or just not a computer whiz, this book is the most readable and easy to understand "missing manual" for Mac users I have yet to find. Does not try to answer every question but covers the basics. Of the three I bought, it is the one I go to first and the one I use the most.

I think the book could be made even simpler for us real dummies. Some of the directions are hard to follow because we are not used to the terminology used. It's a good thing I have a daughter that can bail me out of most of the trouble I get into!

assumes you have a basic knowledge of Macs; nothing Senior about it,

I bought this for my elderly Dad. I assumed that it would start at the very beginning such as how to turn the Mac on and off and continue from there including photos/pictures identifying the different parts, etc. The book is only good for someone that alrrady has a basic knowledge of a Mac; it is not for a novice/beginner. The explanations that it does give are not simple and assume prior knowledge. To me, there is nothing "senior" about it....the print is not large; the explanations not simple; the illustrations are lacking in size and quantity. I'm a PC user; I thought this book would even help me understand a Mac but it didn't. If you are looking for a book to help someone get started with a Mac, this is not it.

Unfortunately - this book is not as up to date as the desk top apple computer I just purchased. It tells you to look at things on the screen that are not on the computer screen. I quess computers advance faster than instruction books

too easy and too hard,
By Jeanne Boyarsky (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Macs For Seniors For Dummies (Paperback)
Let me state up front that I'm not a senior - I'm not the target audience of this book. I picked up this book because I got my first Mac in over a decade and wanted to review/see what changed. I went to the local library and this was the only Mac book on the shelf.
Too hard because: Chapter 1 starts out by talking about what someone buying a Mac needs to think about. It describes words like "hardware" and "graphics processing unit" for someone about to buy a Mac. A person who hasn't bought a computer before and needs that level of detail might be scared by such words. One piece of advice says "if you are a hard core gamer." Really? A hard core gamer is reading a book for people who are so new to computers? I would have liked something up front that said "if you are just using the Mac to surf the internet, get X and skip the rest of this chapter." Too easy because: The book is clearly intended for people uncomfortable with computers. (As evidenced by the fact that there is a "Mac for Dummies" not for seniors. If you do have computer knowledge, the book is way too simple. Which wouldn't bother me if it didn't feel too hard for the intended audience. I was also surpised not to see advice about asking for help at the Apple store if you live near one. I only read two chapters because I learned the book wasn't going to be useful for me. It might get better after that.

I ordered this book thinking that it would help me to better understand how to do things on my Apple Computer. It has been no help to me. I would like to return the book to Amazon.

I found this book far too skimming of Apple capabilities BUT then I looked at Apple for Dummies and it was not much better. I want a Dummy Apple book that gives more technical capabilities of this wonderful machine.
