Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of new blindness in older Americans, and other forms of the condition can also affect children and younger adults. While it does not cause total blindness, AMD frequently results in the loss of independence. Wason, an 86-year-old former journalist, writes of the disease from personal experience. Emphasizing a positive approach, she speaks poignantly of frustrations with the healthcare system and of compassionate as well as impersonal physicians. Information on eye anatomy and physiology is presented in a straightforward fashion. Wason describes early warning symptoms, known risk factors, and treatment options but does not clarify distinctions between standard therapies and more experimental or questionable ones. References are provided for each chapter but are sometimes too general. Appendixes include both standard and oddly incorrect definitions, a helpful listing of agencies and associations, and an updated list of Internet-based resources. Recommended only for very comprehensive collections.?Pamela C. Sieving, W.K. Kellogg Eye Ctr., Univ. of Michigan, Ann Arbor
