5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
This disc kicks. DJ Cam has produced an album that not just "fuses" jazz and hiphop, but finds a point where they seem to naturally intersect. He mixes, sratches and samples from a variety of sources with amazing results. Disc 2, which is mixed live, is probably the stronger disc and features a few tracks which are simply breathtaking.... favorites include...

3.0 out of 5 stars Better stuff out there...
When I got this album (around '97), I thought it was the dopest album ever. There were only two or three songs that I disliked on the entire 2 disc set. It became the soundtrack to my life. Then, I rediscovered DJ Premier and the whole Gangstarr foundation (I say rediscovered because I dug my old Gangstarr stuff out of the dust). Most of this stuff is just DJ Premier for...

He mixes, sratches and samples from a variety of sources with amazing results. Disc 2, which is mixed live, is probably the stronger disc and features a few tracks which are simply breathtaking.... favorites include "Meera" and "Lost Kingdom", which feature an amazing Eastern (Indian?) vocalist, and "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens", which perfectly highlights Cam's prowress on the turntable and in the mixing room. In a word, "Mad Blunted Jazz" is brilliant. Don't let this one get away!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blunted Jazz at it's best, July 31, 2000

Until i bought DJ Cam's mad blunted jazz, i had never heard any of his work. After reading the positive reviews on this album i began to develop some expectations. I can honestly say that DJ Cam fulfilled them and then some. This album is a brilliant blend of down-tempo hip hop beats/scratches with "blunted" jazz riffs and piano. I would highly recomend this album to any one interested in trip-hop or anyone open to appreciate good origional music. After just the first listening...DJ Cam has made a avid fan out of me.

5.0 out of 5 stars a surreal oblivion of audio depths, September 26, 1999

measure triphop by this one man. the dark rythms, entrancing beats, and beautiful vocal samples all add up to an exquisit album. "lost kingdom" is the apex of perfection within the genre as cam uses a toggle switch to elegantly pop such angelic voices into and out of a conglomerate of audio shadows.

4.0 out of 5 stars Head Boppin' Blunted DJ Cam, November 30, 2004
This review is from: Mad Blunted Jazz (Audio CD)
8 years later I'm STILL playing this cd. Released back in 96 as a two disc set including some live interpretations and mixes, this was a cd that came out on the heels of Guru's Jazzamatazz and loads of acid jazz and trip-hop artists that were just getting bigger and better. Not to be overshadowed (ha!), of course today Cam has quite the resume of tunes. From the Loa Project to compilation pieces "The French Connection" (oh yeah, he hails from France), to even his stellar DJ kicks where he takes flavors from this and loads of other artists in Europe and of course, Urban life in genearl.

I really dig this. It starts out with Gangsta $hit right after the intro - hey if you have St. Germain Des Pres Cafe, the cut "No GOvernment"... sampled the ENTIRE base line from this. The title track is relaxed and has a dope bass dropping bridge where the tempo of the track is changed altogether, getting deeper with keyboards. "Suckers Never Play That" will be familiar to anyone that's got his DJ Kicks cd and remembers the mixed up "Milan" cut towards the end of the cd. But also on the disc is the sexy, slick and smooth "Sang-Lien" with French vocals and a loop sound to it, tailer made for cruisin' through the city in the late nights. Those aren't the only good cuts - "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens" actually became one of the bigger chillout tunes in the late 90's with its free flowing beat and gentle vocals and, again, a change of pace in the bridge. CD 2 is the live recording - from 11-30-95. It doens't gte the same rotation as Disc 1 does for me.

I definitely recommend this - especially to anyone that's a long time Cam fan. He once said: "Hip-Hop is some of the most beautiful music." and I'd have to agree with him. He's a DJ that managed to put a sort of mood and feeling into the works here that paint a picture of the city into your head (albeit a dark one). If you dig this, check out his recently released "Liquid Hip-Hop" and of course, Guru's Jazzamatazz. You might also want to check out a few of the "Future Sounds of Jazz" sets that were released on Compost Records along with albums by Amon Tobin (Permutation in particular), Minus 8's early stuff (Beyond, Beyond), DJ Shadow and Mr. Scruff. All in all, this one is a bit dated but I still enjoy many of the tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars When Jazz had an affair with Hip-Hop, April 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Mad Blunted Jazz (Audio CD)
I'm a fan of some of Cam's stuff and always loved the more jazzier element to his work, this album fuses those fat hip-hop beats with gracefull chilled out jazz. I would say that this album is the enbodyment of everything that is cool about Cam. It's like the sort of thing that you would hear in an uber-sheek celeb hang out. Buy this album and show off to your mates how you only listen to music that is quite simply splended.Nuff said.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth jazzy beats with hipnotizing hooks., March 18, 1999

There are so few DJ's out there that understand the musical beauty of hip hop and jazz without messing a song up with lyrics. The jazzy beats are music for your soul and that's where DJ Cam lets his talent flow. Dj Shadow also understands this and I hope they can one day work together. In "Mad Blunted Jazz" you will hear layers of original sounds and beats that will turn any task during your day into a pleasurable experience. The Song "Gansta Shit", is a musical masterpiece. When you hear the way those chimes hipnotize, you will understand the power the music has over you.

DJ Cam's "Mad Blunted Jazz" is a hit! It's loungey, hip-hop, jazzy, and unusual. It's "mad" and freaky enough to keep you a little on edge, but accessible enough to comfort. I'm a fan of Kid Loco, Claude Challe, Carlos Campos, and Hotel Costes, so I'm quite familiar with this genre of music. I have to say that this album is one of the best you can find in this category. You can't go wrong with this one. The title track is phat!!

5.0 out of 5 stars honestly, one of the finest collections i've ever heard, January 9, 2003

I have been buying music for years now, everything from sublime to aphex twin, I can honestly say, this is probably one of the finest pieces of music I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I own all of Dj Cam's albums, and this one is the best, IMO.
Phat Hip-Hop beats laced with jazzier-than-jazz horns and strings, and voice samples of sexy french girls. On track 10 you may recognize the sample, Lady Kier of Deee-light. The question isn't why should you buy it, the question is why shouldn't you buy it. It's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bobbin' ya head Jazz, January 15, 2001
This review is from: Mad Blunted Jazz (Audio CD)
Parisian turntablist Dj Cam's(Laurent Daumail)debut is like a smoky Cognac/Cigar lounge haze that seeps into your mind, body, and soul. Using classic Coltrane and Duke Ellington samples "Free you Turntable and your Scratch will follow" as well as samples from Dee-Lite "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens" he adds just enough head boppin' beats to keep a social event social while remaining chilled. The live disc is a "shaken not stirred" blend with excellent transition from track to track. Disc one also available as "Underground Vibes" on Cam's independant Colombia/Inflammable label with a remix of "Dieu Reconnaitra Les Siens".

5.0 out of 5 stars styles of the future, break beats, November 16, 2001
This review is from: Mad Blunted Jazz (Audio CD)
When I went on line looking for a good sounding beat style,
I was looking at other d.j.s and their styles.I seemed very happy
to hear downloads of d.j.cam, he has the best source of
beats that make sence to the listeners.Even though this is the first time I heard this cat, he seems to be really cool and well respected with his styles and skills. I was very impressed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think everybody should listen to it once, and get the flow of a true genius and beat master!!!!!!!
