Mad Catz R.A.T.TE Tournament Edition Gaming Mouse for PC and Mac (MCB437040002/04/1)

Built for the New Generation of Competitive Gaming

Nimble, customizable, and immensely precise, Mad Catz' Tournament Edition R.A.T. Gaming Mouse provides the speedy mouse movement competitive gamers require. Adjustable lift-off height enables the 8200 DPI sensor to be set to a level which sidesteps z-axis tracking issues. Precision Aim mode permits on-the-fly cursor sensitivity adjustment to steady your aim. And, a simple yet powerful drag-and-drop software interface can equip each of the nine programmable buttons with custom macros. Designed by and for hardcore PC gamers, the Tournament Edition R.A.T. Gaming Mouse is a fierce weapon that puts a full arsenal of cutting-edge features at your fingertips.

Elevated Precision

Making a first-ever appearance in a gaming mouse, an 8200 DPI Laser Doppler sensor automatically detects the gaming surface it's on and then makes game-critical adjustments. Optimized for virtually any surface – even black gaming surfaces – you can stay in control of your cursor in any gaming situation. High-speed motion detection reaches 6m/s and acceleration maxes out at 50G. Practically immune to ambient light and dust, enhanced sensor tracking translates into more precise movement and increased in-game kill rates.

Cleared for Lift-off

Lift-off height is a measure of distance between a mouse and gaming surface. Lifting and repositioning a mouse while gaming can interfere with tracking on the z-axis. The height at which a mouse still tracks after removal from the gaming surface is a matter of personal preference. Enter the Tournament Edition R.A.T. , capable of lift-off calibration previously unseen in a gaming mouse. Precise sensor calibration offers the freedom to tweak the lift-off height to suit your individual style of gameplay. Optimized for both lift-off speed and detection when landing, you can adjust lift-off distance from 0.2mm to 1mm.

Simplified Target Tracking

Precision Aim mode grants on-the-fly cursor sensitivity adjustment. After an uncomplicated setup process within the downloadable programming software, one press of the oversize, easy to actuate Precision Aim button steadies your aim. Another powerful component bolstering your weaponry, Precision Aim mode helps you hit your target the first time, every time.

27 Custom Paths to Victory

An intuitive drag-and-drop software interface delivers total control over each of the programmable buttons and allows the creation of an unlimited number of profiles. Each profile accommodates 27 user-definable commands via nine programmable buttons over three modes. Easily establish a profile for different games and character builds such as sniper, tank, and healer. Within each profile, you can define DPI settings, map media functions, designate Precision Aim sensitivity, assign simple or complex macro timing, and set key bindings. Whether your game of choice is FPS, RPG, or any other genre, you have the power to customize your enemies' demise.

Personalize Your Dots per Inch

Four user-definable DPI settings range from 100 to 8200. A convenient DPI button cycles through custom settings, granting easy access to sensitivity adjustments.

Tenaciously Durable

Courtesy of longer-lasting build materials, this R.A.T. can prevail for five years under extreme duress. And that's if you game six hours a day, six days a week, all year long. Don't play that much? Expect this R.A.T. to last considerably longer. Buttons which typically see the most action – left and right mouse buttons – employ OMRON switches rated at five million cycles.

Fast and Lightweight

Weighing in at a mere 90 grams excluding the cable, the R.A.T. TE is one of the lightest gaming mice currently available. A translucent chassis and agile baseplate smoothly glide atop slick and quiet PTFE feet. Providing next to zero resistance on most gaming surfaces, lightning-quick reactions immediately translate to in-game actions.

Ergonomically Upgraded

An array of ergonomic improvements to this version R.A.T. enhances comfort and control. New-style pinkie and thumb rests harmonize with the natural contours of your digits. And, the palm rest is length adjustable, easily adapting to your hand size and grip technique.

The RAT TE mouse is a near ideal mouse for a fingertip grip if you modify it slightly.

(Fingertip grip: palm doesn't touch the mouse, wrist sits in one place on the desk, fingers and angle of the wrist move the mouse.)

I pried the palm rest past the set screw and off, and hacksawed off about a centimeter of the support under it and the tip of the left side piece.

Now it doesn't hit my palm when I pull the mouse back. And my fingers are farther forward on the stupid right side piece.

Doppler sensor or not, the mouse has the same problem (as do some other mice) where the cursor moves down and to the right when the mouse is lifted up, unless you set the lift off height to 0.2mm. Then it's just fine unless you lift the mouse up and down repeatedly and rapidly.

The mouse works well, tracks your movements perfectly, and you can't make it lose position no matter how fast you move it.

Great Mouse for the price really no complaints at all. 5 outta 5 for value, only thing I find is that because it's so light it feels a bit cheaply made. Poured water on my rat 7, this was a better priced option for replacing.

Would definitely recommend the mouse to family and friends!

The looks of this mouse are awesome, really couldn't be better. The mouse also functions very well for gaming and general use. You can even adjust the DPI settings on the fly or use the buttons as macros for another function such as copy or paste. This mouse if on the smaller side and is very light which could be pros of cons depending on your preferences. I was previously using a Razer Naga MMO mouse and find this much better for gaming, though I do miss the extra buttons for games like WoW and Dota 2. This mouse performs best while playing FPS games like CS: GO.

Because the mouse was designed with a lot of straight lines it is not quite as comfortable to use as other larger, more rounded mice. I tend to use this mouse in a "fingertip" fashion where I do not actually rest my palm on the device. This is a very good way to game with this mouse because it is so light. Overall I am very happy with the purchase and will update this review if I run into any issues with the product down the road.

The mouse it self appears to be made well and I suspect that it might work well too - if only it was compatible with a Mac as it was advertised. As a normal mouse, it will move the pointer around and let you click the normal buttons, but if you're interesting in programming it with custom commands, then you'd be better off looking for another product - it doesn't work. It claims to work, the interface suggests that it should work, but it doesn't. I put a request into support, and got confirmation that a ticket was created, but they never got back to me - so support doesn't get a good grade either.

Got the mouse Friday May 22. followed printed instructions which stated to plug in the mouse first then install software. this led to a corrupted installation leading to constant cursor drift (see video). Mad Catz tech got back to me just now (afternoon May 27) and stated to uninstall then reinstall diver first before plugging in mouse. this corrected the issue.

From Mad Catz:
By any chance was your device plugged in during installation? If so please go to madcatz.com/downloads and re-install the drivers insuring that your device is unplugged during the whole installation process until you are prompted to do otherwise. What you can also try is using a q-tip and 99% rubbing alcohol on the sensor to insure there is no debris that could possibly be causing this issue. If you test this device on another computer do you happen to face the same issue?

My reply to Mad Catz:
that seems to have done the trick. uninstalled from control panel programs ... didn't do a full key and driver uninstall, however ... reinstalled driver and it stated 'already exists' and i allowed it to overwrite everything and waited for the installation to que to plug in the mouse. after driver installation, i reinstalled the software. same thing 'already exists' even though i uninstalled the software (there is no option to fully uninstall program and drivers in the Mad Catz software). i then reprogrammed the buttons. so far, no drift.... even writing this email. the sensor was already squeaky clean but i did a quick bast of air as the 'laser hole' is too small for any off the shelf cleaning apparatus. So far - if the drift is indeed gone - mouse feel 5-stars, mouse in use 5-stars, software 4-stars (no option for full un-install), printed install manual 1-star (lists reverse order of installation which caused glitch) = 4-stars

buy this mouse but install driver first. printed instructions are wrong.

The mouse wheel stopped working after two and half months. Don't buy this brand! It won't last long!

I was a little hesitant considering most gaming mice fail after a few months use, (which is why I wont buy Razer) however my brand familiarity with Mad Catz/Saitek drew me to consider the mouse, its buttons have a decent lifetime available to them according to manufacturers spec. Its been a gem working with Vector art and some FPS games, as well as when I'm running music product. Software is stupid-simple to use and its default settings are pleanty for my needs. If this mouse fails in the future, I'll be sure to update this review so others have an idea of the fail rate on these mice.
