ONE OF THE BEST BLACK METAL CDS OF THE 90's,
By Thomas Van Denburgh (Wayne, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends (Audio CD)
"Mad Grandiose Bloodfields" by Ancient is amazing. "Willothewisp," "The Draining," "Blackeyes," and "A Mad Blood Scenario" are the best songs on the cd. In this cd, songs like "Willothewisp" and "The Draining" use more of a female voice than its predecessor, "The Cainian Chronicles." I like this element. In "The Draining," they have a female voice singing at the same time as the male voice. This is an interesting effect. Synthesizers are laced into some songs. It gives an eerie effect. If you are looking for an entertaining cd that won't bore you in a few days, then buy this cd. Even though they have an essence similar to many other bands, they are still one of my favorite bands because they have an interesting sound and the lyrics are not retarted.

The best black metal release of 1997,

"Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends" is a destined to be considered a classic in the black metal genre. With this album, Ancient have proven that they are one of the leading creative forces in underground metal. The music is both brutal and very unique and innovative. I highly recommend this album to anyone interested in bands such as Cradle of Filth, Emperor, etc. Hail the Bloodfiends!

Ancient-Where The hate all started......,

Norway's Ancient has always had a dogged relationship with the press and fans alike. Always judged on the silly image and never the music or atmosphere. I've always loved the band, so I guess i'm biased. But also, I come from the background of loving more primitive sounds(Demoncy, Nachtmysticum, etc.), so usually people are surprised at my admiration for this horde. While this definitely is not my favorite Ancient disc,(that honor is reserved for Svartlvheim). This disc has so much to offer, except for tinniness that sometimes overtakes the mix. The Draining, Um Sonho Psycodelico, and Vampirize Natasha, are all atmospheric headbanging masterpieces. This album is best suited for the headphones, and let yourself drift away. Don't let all of the bad press and pseudo-goth posturings, scare you away. Just give Ancient a chance.......

Gothic/Black Metal Classic!,

This is arguably Ancient's best album and definitely the most diverse. Lord Kaiaphas's vocals are truly sinister. The high pitch style mixed with occasional female backups goes great with the music. The guitar work is pretty good too, especially on the Mercyful Fate cover "Black Funeral", where the solos are fast and complex. But it is the vampyric atmosphere on this album that I absolutely love. The first couple of songs are kind of an introduction to the album. With "The Draining" being the song that sends you into the dark world of Ancient. From there on every song is different and a very important part of this masterpiece. My favorite tracks are probably "Hecate, my Love and Lust" "The Sleeping Princess of Arges", which is very mystical and brings out the beauty of the band's music. Then there are tracks like "Vampirize Natasha" which is fast and in the raw black metal vein. These guys are more on the gothic spectrum of music with their lyrical topics and dark music but there is a strong, hate-filled black metal influence throughout the album. As the first reviewer said, fans of CoF and Emperor will probably like this.

This is pure Black Metal. You cant ask for more. With Kaiaphas tormenting male vocals and the lovely Erichte's Blood Boiling Female vocals, It's surely to put you into blood lust. Aggressive and yet Darkly beautiful with Jesus Christ on the piano and keyboards. A must get for any black metal fan!! Check out Ancients Video "Willow The Wisp" on Metalblades volume 2 compaltion.

i bought this album when it came out because i was sick of thenew american "metal". what a waste of money. not to mentionthat ancient just tries to cash in on what's big at the time. they had their "evil" album, then the emperor type northern album, then this vampyric one. can you say cradle of filth. the girl on this album is horrible, her voice and her lousy poetry, what kind of stage name is that? not to mention the high pitched screeches of, "i love you, i love you, i love you", that's ridiculous. and the hip-hop drums and his little "oh yeah" bit.hahahaha. "vampirize natasha", natasha sounds like a black lady with braids, and i don't think that's what they were going for. this whole album is a cradle of filth rip off, and a cheesy one at that. the drums are almost as bad as the lyrics. the only reason i gave it one star is because it's good for a laugh once in a while. this is truly one of the silliest albums from "her majesty" Norway. END
