We were hoping the book would provide more ideas about how a child can appropriately express and deal with their anger or being mad. The book excessively addresses what can cause someone to get mad, but not enough solutions for our needs. The artwork was a bit too "busy" but could definitely spark some conversation. However, the content is geared to the age range listed in the description. Most of the solutions are suited to a child that is mature enough to stop themselves to talk it out. Again, the book is probably much more helpful to a child 6-8 years old.

This is a wonderful book to use in the classroom. When teaching diversity or having group discussions or just helping students accept other students who may have behavioral issues due to personal problems, Mad Isn't Bad can be used in sections or units. I wouldn't recommend reading it all at once rather using it as a tool to teach about anger and how to deal with anger. It is surprising how children exposed to such discussions can help improve classroom dynamics!

I can't put my finger on what bothers me about these books. Maybe it's the Christian references. None of the book reviews I read when purchasing several of these books mentioned that there was stuff about what god wants and what Christians should do. This just doesn't sit well with me. Some of the info is ok but most of the books go to far or off the target subject.
They don't seem to appeal to my boy either. So we rarely even read them after the first time. He never asks for any of them to be read again. That says something important, don't you think? There are better "get along" books.

I have a wonderful girl who has been having trouble expressing her feelings. I got Mad isn't Bad hoping it would start some discussions for us, and it did. The elf-help series seems to be just what our family needs as a discussion starter so we can work together to solve problems. In reference to a different review, I think the being mad at God page could be taped together or merely skipped, but for our family, it was appropriate, since that's something she has asked me about.

I purchased this book hoping it would cover some of the aspects of childhood anger management. I was surprised when I received it that not only did it meet my expectations but it went beyond them. I love how this book touched on forgiving, not only yourself, but others as well.

Mad Isn't Bad is fun to read with kids. The book has nice illustrations and tight writing. There could be more focus on suggesting tips to kids on what to do to calm down when they are angry.

I've found all the books we've read from the Elf-Help series to be really good. They have a great approach to dealing with angry feelings in this book - and it's been useful to provide terminology that says being angry is fine as long as you don't take it out on yourself, others or things.
There is a chapter that references God, which we skip as we're not religious, but that is the only thing that I don't like & that would be fine for most people. Even for us non-religious types the way the God references are written are not too overbearing or judgemental & are easy enough to explain away to small kids.
I would highly recommend any books from this series, regardless of your belief system.

All the info is spot on. It's all the points about anger that I want my child to learn. However there is so much info in this book that there is nothing that kid's get attached and hooked into. The age range for the info is more like 12 and up for the style it is written, but the book looks like its being geared toward pre-K.
There is no story line. The pictures are cute, but basically it's the equivalent of lecturing your child for however long it takes to read the book, and I guarantee they will zone out or just completely not understand. It is full of great tips, but kids do not care about tips.
There is something to be said for repeating info to children over a long time period, it does sink in to an extent, but I don't feel confident as a parent reading this because I am not getting feedback showing interest from my children.
The pictures are great.
There are a few lines in the book about God, this is the first of this series/author that I have read, and it wouldn't be appropriate for my public school pre-K class for that reason even if it did hook interest.
Edit to add- The book is a high quality copy. the pages are thick and strong, the book is medium sized and lightweight but feels solid.
