5.0 out of 5 stars Historical or is that "hysterical" MUST July 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Absolutely DISREGARD the lone 3 star rating here. This is a 5 star all the way. EC comics were so groundbreaking that they actually spawned the dreaded "Comics Code Authority". This first edition of MAD blends their controversial horror themes, incredible art, and satire/humor into a MUST READ for any comics enthusiast.

5.0 out of 5 stars The price was right! September 6, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was always a fan of Mad Magazine, and i have read many of the early issues from the 50's when they were re-issued in paperback form in the 60's. The parodies and outragous artwork are engaging to say the least.
And this, being their very first issue, gives one perspective on the publication's evolution. I stopped buying the magazine in the late 80's after more than twenty years of reading and enjoying Mad Magazine, and i still like to take the trip back now and then.
This one is well before my time, and it';s heartening to know that this kind of sick humor was around even in the Eisenhower era.
Long live the Usual Gang of Idiots!

5.0 out of 5 stars The First Mad July 21, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I wasn't born when Mad Magazine was first published so I was ignorant that the early issues were done in a traditional comic book format than the version we have today. This first issue poked fun at the types of comics EC published rather than the general pop culture parodies we have today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still just as funny. October 11, 2013
By Jim
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I grew up in the late 60s and early 70s with every issue of Mad I could get my hands on, back cover always "eye-balled so as not to bend it! Bill and Sergio and the whole gang made my adolescence better! Good stuff, indeed.

1.0 out of 5 stars It lacks something on a Kindle February 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I used to read these as a kid and enjoyed them enough where I peed my Pants a few times. But on the Kindle the MAD magazine lacks something or it might just be me with an older brain.

2.0 out of 5 stars Prior to Alfred E Newman December 19, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Content was probably apropos for the time but lacked the established edgy content I recall as a kid. But for collectors this is a great find.
