The game is long, so you'll get your money out of it. I've put in HUGE hours since release, probably clocking a good 40 hours thus far, and there is still a great deal more to do. If I had to guess I'd say I'm about 60% finished.
The driving mechanic was VERY well done, especially for a dev who hadn't done one before. The only big thing I would have liked to see is an "E-Brake" or powerslide option, especially with all that wonderful sand around! But alas, there isn't one. Car handling is very solid, and engine sounds are MAGNIFICENT, and they change as you upgrade your rig. I haven't even fired up the V8 yet and I'm already in love with the noise my car makes.
Graphics are solid and the wasteland is striking, with great weather effects. They did a pretty good job of making a relatively drab looking world look sharp.
Lots of upgrades for both max and the car. The combat system is good, but needs some work. More to come on that. The story isn't spectacular, but for this type of game, who really cares.
Now some negatives...
The combat system needs some work. Although it is fun and brutal, it can get very frustrating. Finishing moves often get interrupted, which is unforgivable. Once you grab a guy and start to body slam him, it isn't fair to the player to have some goon punch him and interrupt it, especially since at that point you aren't able to reverse anything. Large scale brawls can be irritating for that very reason. It certainly isn't as solid as Arkham, but it isn't without its own brutal charm.
Upgrades for Max, though plentiful, ran their course too quickly.Read more ›
I've been having a great time with the game so far and if you like the previous mentioned games you're sure to enjoy this game as well.
After playing the game for awhile I'm still enjoying it but sadly a few glitches have toned down some of the enjoyment. First is the option screen when you have to either upgrade your car, skills and the like the menu will switch back and forth sometimes without you pushing a button or moving the controller stick which in turn makes you have to go back to the screen you were previously at and sometimes redo your actions like if you were doing an upgrade and such. Another problem is during the gameplay when you're walking around Max will sometimes spontaneously jump or roll without you using the button to do that action luckily though this doesn't happen as far as I've experienced when you're in a fight. Hopefully they'll release a patch soon to fix these problems as somewhat minute they are still annoying.
The design of the game is fantastic, the sprawling wasteland of the Mad Max universe is beautifully tragic. As you are playing, you WANT to discover what happened in this post-apocalyptic landscape.
The main game play centerpiece is Max's vehicle, The Magnum Opus. In this regard, the game is bar none the best demolition driving game that is available for next gen systems. It reminds me of the late 1990's/early 2000's games such as Twisted Metal. You drive around the wasteland looking for objectives, loot, bad guys, and materials to upgrade your vehicle. With each bit of loot, you have the option to upgrade your car, and trust me, there is a TON of variations on the cars. You can make them faster, slower, more durable, and the list goes on and on. The beauty of this system, however, is that you can't have the best of everything. You have to make sacrifices according to your play style, but the result is satisfying.
Although Max spends most of the time in his vehicle traversing the barren dunes, you have the opportunity to leave the car and take the fight one-on-one. The combat is similar to the Arkham series, yet you don't have the same challenge. You are directed with prompts for counterattacking, using your shivs, etc., however, the mechanics they include are fun but they don't provide the difficulty as Shadow of Mordor's combat.
While this game is great, like all first-time game franchises, there is room for improvement. However, Mad Max has a fantastic start of being a long running title for the gaming world.
P.S. If you buy this game, you will LOVE the intensity of the lightning storms.
