5.0 out of 5 stars Great higher performance shoe with super sticky rubber
Mad Rock shoes are the best value on the market. These are high performance shoes for almost half the money of other brands. And they have the stickiest new Science Friction rubber.

3.0 out of 5 stars Needed a big shoe (size 16).
I wear a size 16 shoe, so I was concerned when I couldn't find any climbing shoes in my size. I sometimes fit in a 15, though, so I decided to give this shoe a shot. When it arrived and I tried it on, it was surprisingly uncomfortable. No, it was downright painfully small. Mad Rock shoes are the best value on the market. These are high performance shoes for almost half the money of other brands. And they have the stickiest new Science Friction rubber.

I don't recommend buying climbing shoes online unless you've tried the specific model and size before because they are meant to fit tight and every shoe fits differently.

Size-wise, I found these fit the same as the Flash and Con-series line. I wear size 10 street shoes, and these fit tight with my toes fully curled in size 10. 9.5 was super tight, 9 was even tighter, and I could barely squeeze in 8.5 with pain (not recommended). The leather has a hemp lining so I don't expect these to stretch much at all, and these won't stink like synthetic shoes. The rubber at the bottom is kind of thin for great sensitivity, but I've heard one friend put a hole in them. Again, don't expect bomber Italian construction, but for the price, technology and performance, these can't be beat. But again, try before you buy online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great shoes, would buy again., November 15, 2010

I ordered these shoes without trying them on which is usually a big mistake. I have wide feet and was worried they'd be too narrow. When I pulled them out of the box and slipped them on it felt like they belonged to my feet, so comfortable. Based on another review, I decided to order the shoes a half size larger than my street shoe. Perfect. They run really close to my street shoe size.

I love the heel contours on these shoes, great for really digging in your heel. The rubber is super sticky and the hemp lining is A+. It keeps your feet from smelling after long hours of climbing. I broke these shoes in at Fountain Red in Northwest Arkansas and never slipped a toe hold the entire three days I was there. These shoes were designed specifically for bouldering. I love them. I only hope they are still around next time I go to buy climbing shoes.

I am a new climber, so I was assured that climbing shoes should be uncomfortable, but this was ridiculous. I ultimately returned them and purchased a pair of evolv shoes in size 15 and, while very tight and kind of uncomfortable, they are not remotely painful. I now know how climbing shoes are supposed to feel on your feet.

The problem with the Mad Rocks is that there is absolutely no give on the top of the shoe and the shoe is very short, so they do not work well for people with large feet. The reason being that our toes are longer, obviously, but that also means that we need more room for our toes to curl up in the shoes. The Mad Rocks do not have that room.

While I have heard great things about Mad Rocks, and I was very impressed with the apparent quality of the shoe and with the styling of the shoe, it was obviously designed by people with small feet. As high quality as it is, I would recommend the evolv Royale, or something with unlined leather or a softer roof. That will give your toes the room they need to curl up and you won't be limping away from the wall. I believe the evolv Defy VTR is a more technical climbing shoe that also has the softer top to allow your toes to curl up better, but I have not tried it.

If you've got large feet, especially size 15/16, just be mindful of this, because there is no reason for you to have to climb in excrutiating pain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great climbing shoe, September 16, 2009
This review is from: Mad Rock Men's Mugen Tech Performance Velcro Shoe (Apparel)
Great versatile climbing shoe. It's well built and comfortable. North Dakota's pretty flat, so I climb indoors and this shoe works great for that. I would advise ordering one size larger than your street shoes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mad Rock Mugen Tech climbing shoes., February 12, 2011
This review is from: Mad Rock Men's Mugen Tech Performance Velcro Shoe (Apparel)
I have been climbing in these shoes for two months and think they are great. Very affordable compared to other climbing shoes. I have only climbed indoors,(tomorrow that is changing in J-Tree), but they work great for small foot chips and smearing. They are very tight as climbing shoes should be. My street shoes are 11.5 and my Mugen's are 11. I have a long narrow foot so it keeps these very tight and curl my toes. The 1st week of climbing assuming you climb 4 or 5 times a week will be rough on the toes. In between every problem, unless it is right next to the next problem, I take them off and stretch my toes before walking barefoot to the next problem. They stretch only a very little so I don't think more than half a size or a full size below your street shoes is needed. The shoes still don't smell even after lathered in sweat. Good starting rock climbing shoes in my opinion.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great shoes but tight, January 19, 2011

Very durable shoes for the money. I have this six months and they have held up well. There are also non-smelly, which is good for climbing shoes. These are very tight - I agree with the people who say order 1/2 size bigger than you would normally.

Rock climbing shoes are something very personal, I think the fit is often more important that other technical aspects of the shoe.

So I have relatively wide and tall feet, and these shoes worked for me. I bought them at the same size as my street shoes and they fit perfectly, tight also on the heels.
