I could not possibly recommend this book more. It hit all my right nerves in when it comes to science fiction. The author has created an interesting variety of worlds and cultures, and atmosphere so well crafted that you can practically smell the air in some of the locales.
The central characters are interesting and sympathetic, and pull the reader into their adventure. The technologies are well described and believable, which can be a trick in science fiction where many authors can go way over the reader's heads making the story difficult to read. Finally, this book is a stand alone story, and I am not a fan of all the trilogies and multi-book sequels, but I really wish she had written more involving these characters.

Paula King (aka Paula E. Downing, P.K. McAllister) seems to be relatively unknown -- not sure why that is. She is excellent at character development, character dynamics and tells a great story. If you like this book, I recommend trying out "Fallway" or "A Whisper of Time". (BTW, if you would prefer to buy used, an older edition is published under another ISBN.)
