Product Description
Although surrounded by pumped up muscle boys at the gay disco, Harry (John Hannah) is alone. The odd shaped birthmark on his face sees to that. In the dark room he find the touch of other men but once the lights come up, again he is alone. Driven to the point of madness, Harry contemplates suicide. He drives to England's north shore and there, breaks down, both physically and mentally. Then one day, while walking along the beach he comes across an overturned bucket. When he kicks it he discovers it is not empty at all, beneath it is a head! Buried to his neck and comatose is Flint (Bernard Hill), a strange enigmatic man whom Harry nurses back to health. These two men begin an odd yet rewarding relationship that proves at least one thing, that all of us can find someone we can trust, someone that we need and someone we can love.

Love Between the Lonely

From WaterBearer Films comes "Madagascar Skin", the story of Harry and Flint, a very unlikely couple. Harry is a shy gay man who just can't manage the gay scene, especially the bar scene. Flint is older and crusty and his background is mysterious. They meet and their relationship evolves from distrust to deep love. It is a comforting film and very romantic. Harry has a birthmark on his face in the shape of Madagascar, hence the title. Harry is a perfect example of insecurity; he has been spurned and rejected. Flint has felt the pains of time and s reduced to living on the beach eating spiders and mice. He also appears to be heterosexual.
The two set up house together in a little clay cottage by the sea. Harry is attracted to Flint but is in fear of rejection. Slowly, ever so slowly, mutual affection rules and the way it happens is both touching and believable. Flint wins Harry over and they realize that they are outcasts in an unfeeling society. There always remains the threat of outward forces ripping apart their idealistic life.
This is truly a romantic movie, a story of two people finding strength and love in each other. It is one of those surprise kind of movie that wins you over. The photography is beautiful and the plot works wonders as it follows the relationship between two men who are social misfits. Poor Harry, he has been discounted over and over again all because of a mark on his face. The acting is extremely well done. The movie tends to be quite "arty" using a lot of symbolism and classic dialog but like I said, the performances are excellent and it is definitely work a look.

This European import is more than a gay love story: it's a film packed with startling images, and a work of cinematic literature.

When a shy gay man rejected at local gay bars because of a large birthmark on his face flees his lonely life and makes his way to a remote patch of coastline, a chance encounter with a shady older man shatters his self-imposed exile from the world of men and leads to love. But the journey is neither easy... nor straight, in any sense of the word.

This lovely film from 1995 features early work by John Hannah and Bernard Hill, both of whom have gone on to do well for themselves in Hollywood productions. It also marks Chris Newby's last turn as writer / director; when oh when will Newby make another movie?

... this version has been edited from the original. Not by much, as far as I can tell, but I did notice one alteration. So, it's either the original dvd with no chaper index or the new edited version. Too bad, because this film is brilliant. Choose yer poison, mate!
