4.0 out of 5 stars These guys are very underratted, May 29, 2007
This review is from: Madam Butterfly (Audio CD)
I have loved Tavares since I saw them perform Check it out when I was about 9 years old. Anyway I own this Cd and I have to say it contains two smoking slow jams. Let me heal your bruises and my love calls. It also contains my two favorite Mid-tempo recordings by this group. Never had a love like this before, and Madame Butterfly. Tavares are one of the most underrated and highly talented groups to come out in the 70's. One listen to this group and you too will agree, these gentlemen can really sing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Title Song Is A Classic, February 11, 2011
This review is from: Madam Butterfly (Audio CD)
My list of truly classic songs would include two by Tavares "Check It Out" and "Madam Butterfly." What's wierd to me is that back in the day I didn't follow the group. After first hearing "Madam Butterfly" the song took up a good spot in the back of my mind and would surface every now and then. One day years later it clicked and I recognized it as a song that I wanted to have and went looking for it as wells their other songs that I had heard at one time or another. It was if my mind was saying to me, time to check them out.

Though known for some disco songs, Tavares had some nice songs before the arrival of disco. Their disco hits are nice but don't hold a light to their R&B ballads and up tempo cuts. This is one group that can really sing and feature strong leads and background. Bobby Martin who produced this album is one of the greatest arrangers ever. He and Thom Bell (alone or together) have arranged some of the biggest hits in pop and soul music down in Philadelphia with Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records and alone producing and arranging other artist and groups like Bobby's work here. Even in the earlier days of The Sound of Philadelphia they worked on early hits and material by the Intruders, Archie Bell & The Drells, Jerry Butler, Wilson Picket, Joe Simon, Dusty Springfield and others.

Even though I was already familiar with three of the songs on this album (Butterfly, Never Had A Love and Games, I had never heard the other songs before. The first song "Straight From The Heart" is a keeper but the rest on a first listen come out as just filler. I do plan on giving them another chance though. Four very good songs exceed my minimum amount for purchasing an album and I also give this effort 4 out of 5 stars. I agree with an earlier reviewer that this group is underrated. I say they are very, very underrated and it's stupid that they are mainly known for their disco era music. They are now one of my all-time favorite groups and have a nice enough body of good material on this album as well as their earlier albums to give the brothers and their late father a bow.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums by the Tavares Brothers!, October 26, 2005

Call me biased, I love everything they do, but aside from Hardcore poetry this is one of my favorites!! I especially love "Madame Butterfly" and Tiny Tavares shines on "Positive Forces"! The vocals, the harmonies and the message is just so uplifting, it makes me sad that no one makes music like this anymore! Our young people are being ripped off by the stuff they call "music" today!
Anyway...all fans of Tavares, and 70's music..this is one has to be in your collection!
