5.0 out of 5 stars Before you bid on a Madame Alexander...check the price in this book!, August 25, 2011

This review is from: Madame Alexander 2010 Collector's Dolls Price Guide #35 (Madame Alexander Collector's Dolls Price Guide) (Paperback)
I am a serious doll collector and I own a large number of vintage and modern Madame Alexander dolls ranging from circa 1936 to the present. Before I buy vintage or modern Alexander dolls, or bid on online auctions, I always refer to this list of dolls and prices for relative values. Remember, the operative word there is "relative." The prices in this book reflect prices for mint or mint in box dolls. Boxes are a must for mint dolls made after 1972, so the absence of a box must be taken into account for value. Another thing that affects value is the present economy. Savvy collectors rarely pay full valued price for a modern doll, we really shop around because in a down economy the price of most dolls fall...only the most collectible, sought after minty (mostly vintage or limited edition)dolls maintain high values such as those listed in this book. The other reason collectors use this book is to get a definitive manufacturing date for Madame Alexander dolls. If you are not a serious collector, this is not a book filled with pictures of all the dolls...there are some pictures, and there is a section that describes the faces and models of various doll molds, but if you are looking to see the outfits on individual dolls, you need more than this book. However, if you are or aspire to be a serious Alexander collector, I highly recommend this book. It is a very, very complete work that reflects many years of research and effort by Linda Crowsey, who has authored this series for quite a few years because she took over where Patricia Smith left off. Crowsey is an Alexander expert...I rely on her works heavily for Alexander identification. I also recommend Crowsey's Collector's Encyclopedia of Madame Alexander Dolls 1948 - 1965. Since this is an encyclopedia, there are more pictures of the dolls and doll outfits than you will find in the Price Guides. If you are looking for pictures...go with the Encyclopedia....or, even better, buy both.
