Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The spring list of American Girl Library titles boasts fun things to do for girls ages eight and up. In Marissa Moss's Madame Amelia Tells All, the now-familiar marbleized notebook opens to reveal secrets of fortune-telling, including how to do palm readings and foot readings, and four tear-out "fortune-tellers" (aka cootie catchers) that reveal such things as career choices and character strengths.

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-5-A tongue-in-cheek compilation of fortune-telling quizzes and games, including foot reading, handwriting analysis, and crystal balls. The book offers the same sense of good, clean fun as the other "Amelia" titles, and has the same format, which resembles a composition book scribbled with colorful doodles. The text looks like hurriedly written, secretly passed notes, which is sure to make it instantly appealing to the intended audience. Be aware, however, that readers are directed to copy or cut out a "good luck doll" and to tear out the last four pages of the book, which contain "fold-up fortune-teller games."-Leslie S. More About the Author

Marissa Moss has been telling stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, but it wasn't very good and it never got published. She didn't try again until she was a grown-up, but since then she hasn't stopped.

The idea for the first Amelia's Notebook came from the notebook Moss kept when she was a kid. Amelia is a lot like her and the things that happen to Amelia really happened to Marissa (mostly).

Along with Amelia, Moss has created many characters and is especially drawn to history. Historical books allows her to imagine what it's like to be alive in a different place at a completely different time. And then there are the Max Disaster books which allow her to play with scientific experiments, inventions, and comic strips.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Your Future Is In YOUR Hands", May 26, 2001

This review is from: Madame Amelia Tells All (Amelia's Notebook) (Paperback)
I purchased this book for my 10 year-old daughter, and she absolutely loves it. As we read it together, I couldn't help but think of what a wonderfully positive message this book reveals.

Designed to look like a child's composition book, MADAME AMELIA TELLS ALL is a very colorful book that is put together quite nicely. There are some really entertaining quizzes that help your child learn more about herself, and there are several pages loaded with words of wisdom to help her make the right decisions in life.

There is a cute "Career Finder" that reveals what your child might be when she grows up, and the last section of the book has some "Fold-Over Fortune Tellers" to share with her friends. The illustrations are excellent, as the colors just jump off the page. I liked the book being done in handwriting, as it comes across on a more personal level.

Overall, this in an excellent product put out by "American Girl," and one that should be read by all young girls.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madame Amelia rocks all!!!!, July 25, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Madame Amelia Tells All (Amelia's Notebook) (Paperback)
Madame Amelia tells all is a great book. All of the Amelia books are fun to read, unlike other kinds of books. Funny, with quizzes and your own fortune tellers, this book ROCKS! Look into the crystal ball and ask it a yes or no question, and find the answer on the next page! Written in kid handwriting, Amelia is very witty. (Actually, Marrissa Moss is the REAL witty one.) With alot of word bubbles, almost like a comic, Madame Amelia is cool. You can find out your spirit names by your birthday, find the sign in the sky that the stars make that you are....(one of the signs is meatloaf with a funny meatloaf character). If you like this book, you HAVE TO READ THE OTHERS! They're all really great.
