Big improvements, way to go EA!,

This review is from: Madden NFL 07 (Video Game)
I previously owned madden 06 for psp and while i found it to be pretty fun, the infamous loading time really brought the fun factor to its knees. EA fixed this problem and a few more with 07 and overall this game is GREAT. Great graphics, great sound, challenging situations, and more to love.
Being a Steelers fan, i first played against the titans to get a feel for the game play and it wasn't hard to pick up since the controlls are essentially the same as 06. EA opened things up with the analog stick which gives you more types of juking moves on offense and harder hits with the defense. the screen movement is smooth and fluent which makes finding an open reciever easier then 06. The game also moves faster then 06 so you have to be on your toes. The sound is also a big improvement when you've got on a good pair of headphones as the crowds are louder and the hits realy stand out. They've even added some new commentary from John and Al along with the some of the same stuff from 06. The franchise mode is great. The game sets goals for you to reach each week and if you acomplish those goals then you're rewarded with points you can distribute amongst your players each week, constantly improving your team as you move through the season. Thanks to this feature, your rookies can develop faster as the season moves along. The graphics are a big improvement also with more shading and the players move better, even their hair seems to shake when they put the big hit on you. There's also some pretty cool end zone celebrations. I can't seem to put this game down and am looking forward to the long road trip i have coming up thanks to this game. This game puts 06 to shame which wouldn't be too tough since EA was making their first football game on the psp platform with 06 so you can tell that they studied what needed to be better and did it. Good job EA, great game! You won't be dissapointed!

Glitches Vs. Fun,

It's got a lot of small glitches, but only one or two affect the game play, not enough to make a difference though. All in all, it's a great game. It's Madden and he's got almost a decade of great games. This one has more glitches in it than any other Madden game to date, for instance... If you run in for a TD, he will say, "The lineman got his hands up and batted that pass down". That's how most of the glitches are. They don't really make a difference. If you're looking for portable football, this is the way to go.

I've played all the team sports game (FIFA, NHL, MLB, NBA, etc..) but Madden 07 was my first experience with American football. Awesome!
Except for a couple of bugs (wrong audio, weird transparent effects), the game plays well in the rookie mode, better in the pro and even better on the All-Pro level. After three months of intensive training (gotta know your audibles), I'm now playing All-Madden and getting my butt kicked by the 49ers... The mini game is boring but unlocks teams and tracks songs (useless). The ad-hoc and infrastructure mode play better than other games (MLB 06), but it's still a work in progress that will never actually progress because of the weak wifi (b) capabilities provided by the PSP. Now that the football season is almost over, it's time to pickup the game.

I know why this game gets great reviews. This game offers great graphics, the commentary is great, etc. But here is my problem, the game plays itself! If you want to purchase a game, and have little interaction. This is your game. You have hardly any interaction with defense, which is most of you game time. You have hundreds of plays to pick, which have the time do not work. Your selection of what to do is great. EA has spent alot of time making it a "fancy" game, but let the interaction to a minimum.
You kinda sit back and let the game play itself on defense. You have no controls on the level of difficulty. When you play the cpu and on offensive, I hike the ball less that a second I am sacked. I am like, WHAT? The game itself is very frustrating. Every went to an arcade game, you put your quarter in, and a second later, your dead? Yes, the game has great graphics, great commentary, great playbooks, etc. etc. But if you are just wanting to watch a game, you have purchase the right game. If you want to interact with the game. Purchase something else.

Had this game on a few trips over the Atlantic. It made time in the airport pass very quickly.
Graphics are amazingly good. Lots of mini games, along with my favorite: a full-fledged Franchise mode. It's amazing just how close this version is with the PS2 version. That's a lot of hours of football with great graphics. All this, and you can take it with you. Well worth $30 bucks. Are you a football fan? You got a PSP? Then you need this game.

You can't have your cake and eat it too? Evidently not, in Madden NFL 2007 for the PSP, if you carry the analogy to offensive audibles.
Overall, this game is great. They got everything right. Except for the execution. The final product. It just isn't finished, and they don't think the problems are significant enough to fix. I disagree. Most people who give the game 5 stars love it, and I love it too. I mean the graphics are dazzling, even on the PSP. I have been exiled from console games (well, the wife and I agree console game systems are annoying to watch on the living room TV if you aren't playing them) so I can't really compare them to the current console versions, but I know the console games must look spectactular when the PSP version looks so great. The players look right out of real life right down to the gloss on the helmets and the ripped up turf on the field. Gameplay is typical Madden, going way back, with extra customization as to player control. The offering of offensive and defensive plays are easier to find with grouping by overall formation, and then by subset (like 4-3, 4-3 over, and 4-3 under all accessible by horizontal key, while switching to nickel or special teams is accessible by vertical keys) and your formation stays put from one down to the next (an advantage over NCAA 2007) unless you get to fourth down, where special teams is automatically selected (a pain if you like to go for it on fourth down). If comparisons to NCAA 2007 are any help (I rated it 5 stars cause they fixed their errors) the NCAA 2007 playbook SEEMS to have more plays than Madden 07, although the quality of plays in Madden has the edge. The defense SEEMS more flexible in NCAA 07 as well, as switching from 4-3 to 3-4 defense is something that can be done with most any defensive playbook, but this is certainly not too limiting, as Madden's defensive plays are better as well. Really, comparing the two games playbooks falls short of good analysis, because each of these two games have plays that are used on the field in the NFL and the NCAA. They are different levels of play. The Madden playbook is easier to navigate, and has the advantage of sticking with the formation of your last play, so overall it is the winner. The problems are simple. The most glaring error which affects gameplay is the "offensive audible" bug. It seems to work against you and the computer, so you could call it a null thing. The problem is that the player has the advantage of being able to not call an audible, or calling a time out to get out of it. The computer has a tendency to call an audible if you show blitz, which is great, because you can back them up another five yards (delay of game) when they call an audible that picks up the glitch. Not EVERY offensive audible picks up the glitch, which is the only thing that makes the game playable. I mean, you could turn off penalties, but I like penalties, because they are part of the game. I don't like too many on my team of course, but they are needed for realism. I don't think you can turn off the audibles, but I don't want to, because it is an element to gameplay which really helps with effective strategy, even if the bugs pops up every so often. But when it happens, especially when you have to watch the clock tick down when it "bugs" the other teams offensive audible, it stinks. The "madden defensive lineman ball batting commentary" bug is uber annoying as well. Just after you have made a big touchdown, part of the fun is the positive commentary afterwards. Running with the sprint button mashed down causes Madden to spout out one of his three or four recorded lines about defensive linemen getting a hand in there and batting down a ball. Which totally spoils your difficult rushing touchdown by breaking you out of the realism which the commentary is supposed to create! I mean, why do you need commentary anyway? You are running the play yourself. The stats show up on the screen. You know who did what to whom and why. The commentary makes it like a pro game on television which you happen to be controlling yourself. When Madden spaces out and says something wacky about a batted down ball when you ran into the endzone, they ought to at least have Al Michaels say something like "I don't know what game you are watching John, but I thought that was a great rushing touchdown." I am simply mad that instead of fixing the 2 major problems, they just left them in there and said, "Hey, no biggie. We can't get EVERYTHING working on this game, but it is still a great game." Really what they are saying is that they can't miss the deadline, and miss out on all those big bucks worth of sales. They can't miss out on selling a game where you have to pay Madden himself and the NFL for all the licensing rights... but we just have to put up with a game that isn't finished. It isn't fair. EA wins, Madden wins, but the consumer loses. "Ball on the 2 yard line. Tensions are high. The defense is showing blitz. Plenty of time left on the playclock with less than 30 seconds to go in the game...the QB is shouting out an audible at the line of scrimage...they are shifting the formation...the offense is trying to come back from a 6 point deficit... they have time to get off one more play...they are out of time outs...play clock down to 15 seconds now...10 seconds remain...5 seconds...they better snap this...they didn't snap the ball! They had plenty of time, but they just didn't snap the ball!" How's that for frustration? Ea wins. Madden wins. We lose.

I've always tried to get into football games.
My friends really digg them and we usually have similar game tastes. I don't watch football, and I've never really entirely understood it (I of course get the basics thankyouverymuch). This game has one of the worst learning curves I've ever experienced. I love when I can pick up a game and have a general understanding on how to play. This is not one of those games. |
