4.0 out of 5 stars Good game with some expected technical issues
If you've ever enjoyed Madden on the PSP, this game is nearly identical to past versions. Take it from a Madden vet who is used to playing within the limits of the PSP. Yes, the rosters are more out of date than usual this year--thanks to the NFL lockout, not to EA. Yes, online features are gone, but have been since '10 on the PSP, so this shouldn't be much of a...

The sad part is most of the reviews on here know nothing. I've been playing Madden since Genesis and there's been plenty of good years. One of them was 2004 Xbox. Well this is still that game. The fundamentals have never been changed. Yeah you play '12 for the 360 and it's a different game, for PSP forget it. The same problems with AI in 2004 are the same problems...

The same problems with AI in 2004 are the same problems now and that's the biggest problem. Sure there's others but playability forget it.

The underlying problem is AI, put it low, it's too easy but put it hard and it's not too hard it just cheats. If your players are average and here we'll go with a stretch say 80s average, it means they can't catch, they can't get open, they can't break a tackle, and you cant' run. Worse it has nothing to do with ability. You can have 15 yards between you and a defender and he'll move lighting fast while your guy will goes in slow motion and intercept the past. Worse is that most often your QB prefers to throw to the defender. Most aggravating. Your receiver will be infront of the defender and he'll just move lighting fast come around and intercept the pass. That's when you can make a play. Most of the time everyone's covered. Throw a pass at your own danger level. But...

And there's a big but, for a few years now you get points as you go and can tweak your players. Once they hit the nineties instead of covering your receiver or whomever they prefer to just leave him open every play and there you go, after a season or two you'll never lose a game because you can make everyone 99 speed and awareness making your team unstoppable. Build up your line and forget it, pick a 60 average guy with speed and you will run for a TD every other play.

And yet there's still one more level of hopelessness. They've never fixed the engine since 2004 so... I've never picked any other defense play other than engage 8 and sack the QB everyother play. I put line men in for TEs and TEs instead of WRs and every run play goes for atleast 10 yards if not for a TD. These are very simple things to fix and should be evident upon game testing. let's give them the benefit of the doubt. You missed in '04. '05 ok. We're looking for a fix in '06, ok missed it, but for sure in '07. Alright '08 it's changing. Nope. '09? '10? '11? '12? Nope none and there won't be a fix because they cash in and love it. They're waiting for a more powerful system and will put the newer engine on it, the game you see on PS3 or 360 and milk that for all it's worth.

My biggest gripe is that when you can play a season against your buddy, no matter where your teams end up the computer cheats and you play your a** off all season only to play your buddy who all of sudden can't be stopped and you can't make a pass and your RBs only fumble. Yeah it's realism but it's selective and it sucks. I've already broken 1 PSP on this game and I won't break another on a madden game.

Cheers

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good game if you can get past the rosters, September 20, 2011

This is the first Madden game I've played on the PSP and it's about what I expected.

For the PSP, the gfx and sounds are fine. The commentators are pretty lousy, as they say things that don't match up to your play, but I usually turn them off and/or just ignore them.

The big downfall is that the roster is really out-of-date. But, what can you do? It's sad that EA can't somehow provide a patch to update this. But, I wanted a football game and this is what is available on the PSP. Hence, I bought it and am enjoying it for what it is.

1.0 out of 5 stars All the problems of an old PS2 version, half the fun..., October 10, 2011

Let's start with the bad stuff cause honestly there's not anywhere else we could start. Just about zero rookies have been added and players are still on their old teams. What's even better is there is no online mode and you cannot update the rosters without either creating new players yourself and trading existing players to their new teams manually or importing a random roster file from a sketchy forum poster. My game stalled anytime I modified the default rosters and went through Training Camp and a couple of times this stalling caused my Franchise mode save file to go corrupt (infuriating). The controls cannot be modified. Although the responsiveness of the game is pretty good, they do take some getting used to. Add that to the simple fact that Madden was clearly meant to be played on the big screen and guess what you have... Not such a great PSP game. At the end of the day, it's Madden so it's not absolutely terrible but it REALLY just seems like they rushed this one to market... your garden variety "Money Grab". With all the stalled games I had, I can't possibly recommend it. Shame on you EA Sports. So to recap...

CONS
Rosters Not Updated
No Option To Update Rosters from EA Sports
No Online Mode
Game Freezes
Save File Corruption Problems
Cannot Customize Controls (either advanced or basic options)
Small Screen... Fast action loses detail
Priceless Feeling Of Being Robbed Again By EA Sports

PROS
It's a football game

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game with some expected technical issues, November 9, 2011

This review is from: Madden NFL 12 - Sony PSP (Video Game)
If you've ever enjoyed Madden on the PSP, this game is nearly identical to past versions. Take it from a Madden vet who is used to playing within the limits of the PSP. Yes, the rosters are more out of date than usual this year--thanks to the NFL lockout, not to EA. Yes, online features are gone, but have been since '10 on the PSP, so this shouldn't be much of a surprise to anyone who pays any attention to the series on this platform (they gave online the ax because hardly anyone was using it). Yes, it will freeze occasionally, but once again, this issue has been around for years, so should surprise no one. Other than those annoyances than anyone over the age of 5 should be able to see coming from a mile away, this is by no means a bad game, especially considering that the PSP is the least powerful piece of hardware to have a version of Madden 12. I mean, the PSP is somewhere between a PS1 and a PS2 as far as graphical prowess is concerened, so I don't understand some of the harsh criticism it receives in this department. It's not a PS3, folks. EA maxed out the PSP with Madden long ago, and it will never get any better than this as far as gameplay and aesthetics go. If you can get over the obvious hardware limitations (you likely already have if you are a PSP afficionado in 2011), and you are a pro football fan, then this game is definitely worth your consideration. While not as good overall as the PS2 version (which is probably the most comparable version of Madden 12 to this), it is the best (and only) handheld version around. Compared to it's big-brother console versions, it is definitely watered-down in some areas, but it still gives you a good Madden fix when you're away from home if that's what you want it for. Gameplay is tight once you get used to working around the lack of a second analog stick, local multiplayer with other PSPs works fine, and it even has some PSP-exclusive features such as the Assistant Coach mode for player progression in franchise mode. I personally am a franchise mode fanatic, and this version of Madden definitely does that particular mode justice. 3.5 stars out of 5 for this one. It's not a console Madden, but it's about as close as you're going to get on the old PSP.

Its just more of the same with Madden 12. They throw in a few new animations and couple of new features and call it a day. All in all the the past few Madden games have been nothing more that a roster update. With that said its still a solid game and I personally do enjoy playing it.

While I love the Madden series on all game systems, and have played Madden on PSP since the PSP came out in 2005, THIS is the first version that I sincerely regret buying. The ONLY difference between this version and 2011 is a partial roster update and the ability to design your own play. Neither feature is worth $40. These should be considered fraud by EA Sports. LITERALLY not one thing is different in the gameplay, settings, etc. Even the mini-camp feature has the EXACT same teams at the exact same level of the mini-camp. Even the roster update is bad because it must have been done early in the summer before free agency. EA - all you had to do was create a new feature or two to satiate your loyal fans! Shame on you.
