4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this game, but ...
As a long-time Mac enthusiast, I might well have bought Madden NFL 2000 just to show my support for the first big-time sports game to come to the platform. Lucky for me that the game turned out to be so good. 3.0 out of 5 stars Madden NFL 2000 needs G3 w/Voodoo card
The game plays great on fast machines, but anything shy of a hopped up G3 with a 12 meg Voodoo card and plenty of system RAM is not much fun. Bottom line: With the proper machine the game is a blast. Game tests with slower machines were painful at best.

4.0 out of 5 stars Buy this game, but ..., December 29, 1999
This review is from: Madden NFL 2000 (Mac) (CD-ROM)
As a long-time Mac enthusiast, I might well have bought Madden NFL 2000 just to show my support for the first big-time sports game to come to the platform. Lucky for me that the game turned out to be so good. Having never played Madden before, and being relatively ignorant of the intricacies of football, I was pleasantly surprised by Madden's fast and fun gameplay. The playbook and game options are rather staggering, but the basics are not hard to grasp in a few sessions, and when I played my first 15-minute-quarter exhibition game, I got so wrapped up in the play-by-play and action that I was surprised that almost two and a half hours had gone by.

Now the caveats, which, though numerous, are not severe. While Madden runs acceptably on my stock G3/266 Mhz machine (with its underpowered graphics acceleration), the player graphics are pretty choppy up close, and one would really need either a newer machine or, say, a Voodoo 3 card to see this game at its best. Also, as of December, Madden for the Mac doesn't yet support PC-Mac network games or allow Mac users to find opponents via the MaddenNet Internet game-matching service (though a third-party game-matching service application is included, and a PC-Mac solution is supposed to be in the works). The manual is simultaneously overwhelming (in its extensive lists of commands and options) and underdetailed (no real walk-through is provided for the novice, and the manual's reference to game-based help menus is a weak cop-out--like the menus themselves). The manual also appears to have a number of typos (wrong page number cross-references, missing text), and the sometimes-there, sometimes-not keyboard conversions for gamepad buttons are frustrating. The game's deep nested set of menus is tricky to navigate and employs what to me are counterintuitive interface techniques (spacebar to select some options, for example). Finally, it did not go unnoticed by me that the Windows version is cheaper than the Mac version, at least on this Web site.

All this aside, Madden NFL 2000 is a great game, and a great and heartily welcomed addition to the Mac family. May it be the first of many Mac sports games.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as any football game I've played, December 13, 1999

Finally, a great sports game for the Mac! Madden NFL 2000 is a great product. It has great gameplay, is a lot of fun, is registered with the NFL and the Players association, and much more. I have an iMac Bondi with a Voodoo2 upgrade, and the game runs beautifully. I would recommend this product to anybody looking for a fun sports game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, but WAY too similar to Madden 99, December 19, 1999
This review is from: Madden NFL 2000 (Mac) (CD-ROM)
I'm a brand-new imac purchaser, and this the first game I bought so far. Being a console kinda guy before, I can say that the graphics and gameplay are almost identical to madden 99. That's not neccassarily a bad thing, if it ain't broke don' t fix it, but I found no upgrades in the look either. Contrary to reviews done buy magazines, I found that the main menu was very clear and understandable, not difficult at all to understand. I have an ishock pad by Macally, and I can tell you it controls beautifully. I recommend this pad for anyone buying this game. It is identical to the playstation dual shock, and it's great. i found the booklet to be WAY too thick for a sports game, but that might just be becuase I'm used to plugging in and playing. If anyone reading this has an imac DV like I do, I can tell you that although the Rage Pro card isn't going to give you the same as the Voodoo 3, it's smooth enough for extended play without being annoyed. The players are a bit choppy upclose, but look great when you aren't pressing up on the monitor. The gameplay is awesome, the commentary is pretty lenghty as well. Bottom line is: this is the best game available for the mac. Although Microsoft NFL Fever 2000 is the best sports game for pc's in general, Madden 2000 is pretty close. Besides, if you have a Mac, what real choice do you have?

4.0 out of 5 stars An awesome game!, October 18, 2004
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Madden NFL 2000 (Mac) (CD-ROM)
Madden 2000 for mac is awesome. There's tons of bells and whistles; everything's customizable. There's also stats for everything, so you can track your favorite players performace even if their not on your your team. And the season mode is great, plus their teams from all the way back in the 60's. The music is good, but the ingame commentary is terrible. Madden just says " ... and the catch by so and so" or " ...and a run of 6 yards by whoever" with only ocasional comments on the actual game. Graphics are pretty good, but they get a little fuzzy and strange sometimes. Just make sure that on the setup screen you set the graphics to OpenGL and not Software. Besides commentary and graphics, this game is great and definitely deserves a four and a half star rating. It's a great game and definitly worth the money.

I have an original iMac, which isn't a super fast computer, but also isn't super slow. Madden runs well for the most part, but it took some tweaking (and a download of a newer version) to get it to work properly. Even now, the program has some glitches. It will crash unexpectedly even though I have 160 Mb of RAM. It takes some computer know-how to fix the problems, and it takes more time and knowledge than most people will want to spend. But once you get it working, it is just fantastic. It keeps statistics of everything under the sun, the graphics and sounds are really nice, and the game play is quite realistic. I recommend this game highly for those who will be able to adjust the game parameters so that it functions properly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Finally!, April 13, 2000
This review is from: Madden NFL 2000 (Mac) (CD-ROM)
I've been purchasing the Madden football games for years, from the Genesis days to the PlayStation. Needless to say, when they FINALLY ported it over to Mac, I pre-ordered it and waited impatiently. It's about time too! If you are a football fan at all, this game is a gem. The franchise mode is outstanding, letting you manage a team (or teams, if you get fired or switch) for multiple years, including rookie drafts, free agency, retirements, etc. The game is visually stunning, with smooth 3D graphics and easy-to-understand gameplay (I'd say a gamepad is a MUST for this one). I would give it 5 stars, but it was a little buggier than normal. Maybe 1 out of every 5-6 games I played, it would freeze up, both on my G3 laptop and my new G4. A patch came out that fixed a lot however. Sports fans cannot go wrong though if they pick up this one for the Mac.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fun if it only worked..., November 18, 2006

I like this game & it's cool but unfortunately it does'nt work. I can't believe they are stil selling this game that does not work! For MAC OS9 Users it does work (though with tons of glitches) but on my new computors (G5 & MacBook Pro) it does not work. On the old OSX operating systems (Pre - 0SX 10.4.8) it would come up in the 'CLASSIC' os9 application but the new OSX(10) operating systems there is no 'CLASSIC' Os9 system so therfore I can not play the game any more. So the only computors this will work on is a mac running a OS9 system or an ealrier OSX system with the 'CLASSIC' system still operative - since the new OSX sytemes no longer have 'CLASSIC'. Which sucks. Other than that even if the game worked with new (2005 to 2006') mac's this game needs a major re-haul to work properly because it would ALWAYS freeze during play and other terribly annoying stuff. So unless your running OS9 I would not but this game cause it wont work. Even then! on an os9 system it would still freeze all the time so... Madden! Give us mac users a Playable Game!!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Great bells and whistles, but game play is only fair, December 23, 1999
This review is from: Madden NFL 2000 (Mac) (CD-ROM)
This game has a lot of impressive features, but I have found it difficult to play the actual game so far. I love the stats it gives and the use of actual player names. The detail in this regard is amazing. I am also impressed with the graphics; the stadiums look very realistic, and the detail on the players is good too.

Unfortunately, I have a hard time controlling the players. The game moves at a very fast pace, and that doesn't leave a lot of time to feel like you're actually controlling what goes on. Hopefully, this won't be the case after playing the game for a few months. My other complaint is that the plays (while there are a lot of them!) are difficult to read; they are very small and almost blurry.

Although Madden 2000 beats it in graphics and stats, EA's NCAA 98 is a much better choice for reading and executing plays and controlling the movements of the players.
