New additions to the fine Madden 99 game include faster yet less-detailed graphics, smoother animation, and additional onscreen treats such as goalpost nets, yard markers, and sidelines filled with coaches and teammates. One of the greatest new features is the hot route option, enabling players to change individual receiver routes at the line of scrimmage--it's like an audible, but doesn't require changing the entire play. More goals beyond just winning are here in the form of the Madden Challenge, giving players access to hidden stadiums and other goodies for successfully completing a series of increasingly difficult tasks, such as 30-plus yard receptions or a having a running back rush for over 100 yards in a game.
The artificial intelligence (AI) is still as slick as ever, but this game is best when played in two-player mode. Play-by-play commentary has been expanded for this game, but remains a bit sparse. A word of warning: the arcade mode is still pretty heavy on simulations, so only veterans or players who enjoy a steep learning curve need apply. --Jeff Young

The Franchise Mode makes it a must for gridiron fans,

I have been playing the various versions of Madden football for several years, and I have to say that of all the enhancments they have made, I enjoy the Franchise mode the most. Yes, it takes patience to get through 15 or 30 years worth of games, but the management aspect makes it worth it. And unlike Madden 99, the latest version includes the new Browns franchise in regular league play, so you can truly build a franchise from the ground up. The ability to do muti-player and draft pick trades is also a big plus. The cpu does tend to take over if you are beating an opponant badly, which is annoying. Giving up a huge play that you have stopped consistantly all game on 3rd or 4th and long can be frustrating, even if you are winning by 42 points it can make you scream. And, because of licensing conflicts with the NFLPA, there are players named DL No. 42, instead of Jevon Kearse, which takes away from the over all realism of the game, but over all, Madden 2K is a great game.

I have been playing Madden footballs ever since they first came out for the Apple IIe back in the late 1980's.Needless to say I am quite an expert how the new features compare. Each year Madden continues to amaze me with features, graphics and gameplay. I have played a variety of other football games for N64 such as NFL Blitz and NFL Quarterback Club 1999 and 2000 and I must say that Madden is by FAR the superior gaming system. Quarterback club has better graphics, but the game play is pathetic and almost impossible to play. NFL Blitz is more arcade style and I didn't find it be realistic for the purpose of a true simulation. Madden does have a few problems: (1) the manual that comes with the game indicates that you can create a player, and in fact one of the madden challenges involves creating a player and playing a game. I however, have not found the menu anywhere in the game that allows you to edit/create a player. I have checked Easports.com and only the playstation version appears to be able to do that. It would seem to me that they should have printed two manuals then (one for N64 and one for playstation). (2) Every player has arms that are like Hulk Hogan. I think that is crazy. (3) The sounds of the crowd of are terrible and over the course of the 15 minute/quarter game tends to give a headache. Despite my criticism, this game is still the best by far of all other N64 football games available!

There are so many different games in this one game. But for me the most fun was the franchise mode. It was the best franchise mode i have ever seen in any game. The value of this game is priceless, because its not one of those games that you buy and play once. Everytime you play its different. If it lasts me that long ill play for the rest of my life
