5.0 out of 5 stars Not a review, just a summary of new features., June 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Madden NFL 2005 (Video Game)
As I said in the title, this is not a review. I just want to save like-minded people some time, and summarize what makes 2005 different from the 2004 title. While this isn't platform specific, the biggest upgrade this year is for the Xbox, as EA and Microsoft have finally settled, and online play has finally arrived via XBLive. I'd like to not assign stars at all, but Amazon doesn't allow for pre-release non-reviews. So I'm assigning 5 stars based on Madden 2004, and the promise of the following new features. It is not meant to be commentary about the 2005 title.

I've done this for NCAA 2005 as well, but decided to adapt it for Madden as well. Everything in here is Madden-specific.

GENERAL GAMEPLAY IMPROVEMENTS:
- The hit stick: The Hit Stick is a brand-new control innovation whereby players can attempt to lay a big hit on their opponent by flicking the right stick. They are risky, as a mis-timed hit can be devastating to your defense, but it can all pay off with a huge hit and a fumble or dropped pass.
- Reworked DB play/pass defense: Rebuilt from the ground up, with a focus on man-to-man coverage. Good DBs will now blanket their receivers better than ever before, and "shut down" corners will now play as such.
- All alternate team jerseys are now available.
- Updated player models for more intense realism.
- Reworked stadiums, fans, and environmental graphics.
- New running animations. "Over 1000 new animations added."

FRANCHISE MODE IMPROVEMENTS:
- Restricted Free Agents - Allow your young guys to test Restricted Free Agency.
- Preseason Position Battles - Let two players who are similar in talent battle it out for the starting job.
- Player Personalities - Players react to everything that happens to them and if things get really bad for them, they demand a trade. If you're not throwing the ball to your star receiver, you'll hear about it.
- Franchise Tags - Tag players who refuse to re-sign with your team.
- New Realistic Off-season Free Agency - Players no longer only care about money. They now look at your team, the players you have, your team prestige and lots of other factors.
- Weekly Game-plan - Your coordinators provide you with a game-plan each week that contains keys to stop your upcoming opponents.
- NFL Icons - They've acknowledged the stars in the NFL and they become Icons in your Franchise. These players influence free agents and affect morale if something happens to them.
- Practice in Franchise - You can now practice with your current franchise team.
- Improved Team Management - Teams intelligently manage their rosters now. They cut dead weight and sign regular season free agents.
- Name Team Captains - You can now name your team captains every year in Franchise.
- Rivalries - Rivalries are a new addition to Franchise this year.
- Team Prestige - A new aspect of Franchise is prestige. Turn a perennial loser around to become a true powerhouse.
- In-Season Player Progression - Players now progress based on how well they're doing during the season. Breakout players are rewarded for their performance.
- Improved Draft - A ticker, announcer and trading during the draft highlight our draft improvements.
- Change Player Positions - You can change the positions of players in Franchise every season now.
- Storyline Central is a new addition to Franchise Mode this year that focuses on every story that is at the forefront in the NFL. The stories around your team now impact your team. If the rookie RB is pushing the veteran for playing time but not getting it, his morale will drop and it will affect his performance. You hear about the stories three different ways.
1) Newspaper. Every team in Franchise has a newspaper from their local city that discusses only the stories that pertain to that team. We also feature USA Today, which is the franchise's national newspaper. In USA Today, the most important stories from the entire NFL appear.
2) EA Sports Radio. They've added sports talk radio to Franchise, where host Tony Bruno breaks down the week's biggest stories. Each week's show includes call-ins, coach and player interviews, trivia questions and from time to time, Tony will rant about important issues in the NFL.
3) Email. Every week on your PDA, you'll receive emails about everything going on with your team. You will receive emails from players, coaches, general managers, the PR department, etc.
- Create-a-fan: Create your own dedicated crazy fans. To be included during game-time celebratory animations.

ONLINE PLAY IMPROVEMENTS:
- Opponent scouting: They've added a new scouting report that allows you to check any player's (online) tendencies. You can look at their favorite playbook and formation, as well as look at how much they no-huddle, call hot routes, and audible. It's meant to try and cut down on the number of games wasted to opposition that cheats or otherwise plays in a manner you're not interested in.
- Quick tournaments: 4 or 8 player tournaments built right into the online system.
- Even team mode: An option that will allow an even playing field, regardless of the `real world' strengths and weaknesses of two programs/teams.
- Improved leaderboards.
- "Rushing Attack" mini-game, as defined above.
- EA Messenger: Track dozens of friends online.

That's all I've come across so far, but it's a factual aggregation of information, all directly from the source. Either Electronic Arts, and/or Phil Frazier the line producer via an interview on EASports, much of the info is paraphrased or even partially or wholly quoted. None of this comes through third parties, or speculation. Given that, this looks to be one of the biggest leaps forward this franchise has enjoyed in some time. Particularly for Xbox fans as they finally get online play, but really for everyone. But enough, I now return you to your regularly scheduled, "tHiS gAMe iz dA bOMb!" 'reviews'.

This is an impressive game. Great gameplay and outstanding graphics (especially the instant replay, once you get the hang of it). Sure, the voiceovers get annoying in their repetitiveness, but that gets drowned out with the crowd noise anyhow. I got this one after checking reviews here and GameSpot. I agree with all the positive comments.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Madden series!, December 10, 2004
A Kid's Review

This review is from: Madden NFL 2005 (Video Game)
I started playing Madden in 2000 with Madden 2001 on N64. the graphics were ok, but there weren't as many game modes as there are now. The next year, I got Madden 2002, and still it didn't wow me. The year after that I got Gamecube and skipped Madden 2003. Last year I got Madden 2004 and it was amazing. I decided to get Madden 2005 this year and it's unbelieveable. The new Features are amazing:

Hit Stick: Bowl over someone when you have an open hit on him.

Create-A-Fan Mode: One of the greatest new features in the game this year. Create an ultimate fan for your ultimate team.

Upgraded "Franchise Mode": Newspaper, EA Radio Show featuring Tony Bruno, practice and more.

All these features and more are in Madden 2005. This is a must buy game.

5.0 out of 5 stars Madden is the BEST!!, February 21, 2005
A Kid's Review
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Madden NFL 2005 (Video Game)
Madden NFL 2005 is without a doubt the best football game of all time. It has extremely good graphics and it is very interactive. In this game they added a couple of new features such as the "Hit Stick". For Gamecube you push the c-stick downwards and watch the slam-fest begin. Probably 10% of the time you can force a fumble and recover for a touchdown, SWEET. In the remodified franchise mode you can listen to a very annoying radio show by Tony Bruno or just listen to the sound track (go with the sound track). There is all new owner mode in which you can set prices for your tickets. Another coll thing is create a fan mode. You get to create your own fans for the new three-d cut scenes. There is also new practice mode where you can practice certain plays that aren't up to standard when you play your games ( rember this is only in franchise mode)Just as I said above, Madden is the Best!!

4.0 out of 5 stars More Good Stuff than Bad, January 31, 2006
A Kid's Review
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Madden NFL 2005 (Video Game)
Madden 05 is a great game, but there are still some problems.

GOOD STUFF
1. The graphics are amazing!
2. Al Michaels and John Madden have more(and better) comments on the game.
3. The brand-new "Hit Stick" makes forced fumbles more frequent.
4. The instant replay is much improved and very good.
5. Managing the teams is very easy.
6. The playbook has practically every play.
7. The computer is easy or hard to beat which is good.
8. There are a lot more cheats.
9. John Madden gives good advice.
10. The Player Stats are pretty accurate.

BAD STUFF
1. The refs practically call no penalties, even if you have penalties on full.
2. The players want way too much money.
3. The salary cap is annoying.

This is a good game to buy. It is very good and it is addicting. Pretty good!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game, better than before, January 30, 2005
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Madden NFL 2005 (Video Game)
Madden NFL 2005 is a really good game.I got it this past Christmas and it was the first game i played. I loved it. I played it when i got home from school, and after i had dinner, it is so fun. But as i play it it has a few flaws to it. I have a franchise on it, and i play every game on it. But when there is a call on the field that has to be reviewed. they almost always reverse it. Even if you look at the replay a million times and it shows the opposite of what they say. But sometimes the call is made right, that is when it is so clear that they have to make it right.
Also I make franchises on my game and i have made it to the superbowl 3 times on my game. But every time i made it to the superbowl i always play the Bucs. And i hate it. We need a new team to play in the superbowl. Both my next door neighbors have it. And i talked to one of them and he said that the rams always make it to the superbowl for him.More teams need oppurtunities.
Lastly i hate that you can't create a fan on a created team. So i have my team made up and i made a fan for my favorite team, (who else but the Defending Super bowl Champs, New England Patriots, who will crush Donovan and the eagles come super bowl night.)And i make my team replace the pats so i wouldn't have to beat my own team. And i see fans on the sidelines when i play but, none of them is my fan. I mean if they are gonna do create-a-fan then, they should make it available for each created team. They should make stuff for them to wear that have the generic logos on them. That would make the game better.
Other than that the graphics are great, replay is great, an i love storyline central. Its good stuff for hard core football fans. Those problems are very minor, they don't screw the game up of freeze it or anything, so i STRONGLY suggest that you get this game. It will blow you away. Trust me i play it almost every day!

5.0 out of 5 stars The only NFL game you'll need - especially for just one player, November 6, 2011

I dare to say that this is the only NFL game you'll need for the gamecube, but even across other platforms like the wii, ps3, and xbox 360. Sure, it doesn't come anywhere close to the graphics, playbook, nor ability to play with other players across a network, but this is a very solid game that isn't that all different from today's football games.

This game is endlessly fun because:

* Control. You can control were you want pass protection, players to go and shift, etc. etc.

* Hit stick. This newly implemented feature allows you the ability to pull back and push forward to give a punishing attack to your opponent. Use wisely because it will cost you if you miss.

* Running. Wow, it's so fun to break a tackle and run into an opponent.

* Is similar to today's Madden games. The playbook, QB vision, creating your own plays, audibles, all of the foundation and important aspects are in Madden 2005.

Honestly, from 2005 to 2011, you'd expect more progress, but there hasn't been a substantial difference. The differences and improvements are there, but it's not enough to warrant you to purchase anything newer than Madden 2005, unless you want to play against another player online. Get this game if you're contemplating about getting a football game, especially if it's just for your own individual enjoyment.
