Book Description

September 5, 2000
Nothing is as dangerous to a lawman
As a wanted woman....

It had been a clear case of self-defense, but Maddie Rutledge was branded a murderer by a corrupt judge and sent to prison. Now on her way to testify against those who imprisoned her, she is escorted by a lawman with a tarnished past of his own. For Rivlin Kilpatrick it was to be a routine assignment. But there is nothing ordinary about this fiery woman whose compassion touches his soul and forces him to confront the demons that have driven him to the lonely life of a U.S. marshal. And there is nothing easy about their trek to Leavenworth, for an unknown enemy has determined that neither will arrive there alive. Maddie cannot say which danger threatens more peril--those who want her dead, or the dream of a love she can never have....

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Maddie Rutledge is serving time for murder when Marshal Rivlin Kilpatrick comes to Fort Larned, Kansas, to take her to Leavenworth. Unbeknownst to her, Maddie is to testify against the men who falsely accused her and abused their authority as Indian agents in Oklahoma, where she taught school in the 1870s. What should be a routine assignment turns out to be far more complicated when several attempts are made to kill not just Maddie but Rivlin as well. They become unlikely allies as they attempt to find out who wants to see them dead, and they start a relationship that each knows has no hope, but both have learned from experience--raised in an orphanage, Maddie suffered cruelty, and Rivlin grew up fast when he fought in the Civil War and witnessed the devastation wrought by the ammunition his family manufactured--and know that because life is short, it's best to take what is offered. LaFoy has crafted a charming and entertaining historical romance with a touch of humor. Patty Engelmann

5.0 out of 5 stars Peril and Lust in Cowtown!, September 5, 2000
By
M. Johnson (Kansas, America) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Maddie's Justice (Mass Market Paperback)
It took grit and gumption to make a go of it on the frontier prairie, but it was a land of escape and new beginnings. So Maddie Rutledge came west to escape a cheerless orphanage and a mirthless childhood. But when 19th century greed and corruption forced her to commit a murder in self-defense, she was a woman alone...facing a bleak future as a federal prisoner. Rivlin Kilpatrick was also on the run: from the horrors of the Civil War that haunted him and from his failure to take a place in his prestigious family as a titan of industry. It seemed routine: A U.S. Marshal transporting a federal prisoner. But someone wanted one or both of them dead and suddenly, they were forced to flee. From the bawdy brothels of a Kansas Cowtown to the power rich drawing rooms of High Society Cincinnati, Rivlin and Maddie play a high stakes game to stay one jump ahead of the tightening web of deadly political intrigue...and are forced to turn to each other to fill the empty hollows of their hearts. This is a superb rendering of the Wild, Wild West with a clever cast of supporting characters that deftly deliver Leslie Lafoy's trademark wit and humor. But the page-turning tension is driven by villains deadlier than a rattlesnake in tall grass and a romance that builds and paints the sky like a prairie dawn. Saddle up, Cowgirls, and get ready for a wonderful ride!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, August 5, 2001

This review is from: Maddie's Justice (Mass Market Paperback)
Great book. Couldn't put it down. Characters were believable and likable. The plot kept you entertained. If you like romance novels that do not have a lot of silly arguing and graphic sex scenes...this is for you. This book treats the reader to an interesting plot and characters that grow fond of each other in addition to being sexually attracted to each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars First time Leslie Lafoy reader, May 4, 2001

This review is from: Maddie's Justice (Mass Market Paperback)
I was not disappointed in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed this story. Lelie Lafoy makes you feel as though you are right there in the story. You can see the scenes so clearly. The story is very different than anything I have ever read. You can really understand why Maddie does not have any hope for the future. You respect how Rivlan fights against is strong feelings for Maddie and is ethical responsibility. The obstacles that these two have to overcome makes the story that much more interesting. I really like both of them. I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a wonderful romance.
