About the Author

Catherine McDermott is a Professor in Design History at Kingston University and a Consultant Curator at London's Design Museum. She has curated a series of exhibitions relating to contemporary design both in Britain and abroad, including the V&A's first ever exhibition to be shown in the US, in 1990. Her 1997 exhibition Erotic Design at London's Design Museum remains the most popular show ever staged there. In 1998 she was commissioned by Lord Spencer to work on an exhibition celebrating the work of his sister, Diana, Princess of Wales, which has won several awards. Recent projects include the first UK exhibition on the work of Vivienne Westwood at the Museum of London. Catherine McDermott lectures on contemporary British design at various US universities and museums, and has published widely in the field of contemporary design, including Street Style, British Design in the 80s (1987, and the Design Museum's 20th Century Design (1998).
