A Hit Or Miss Sex Comedy With Some Inspired Visual Gags Amidst A Lot Of Silliness,
By K. Harris "Film aficionado" (Albuquerque, NM) - See all my reviews (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Made for Each Other (DVD)
There is nothing subtle or understated in the ribald sex comedy "Made for Each Other," and its unabashed, unapologetic, and unrelenting silliness is both its greatest asset and its biggest drawback. I enjoy over-the-top humor that pushes the boundaries of good taste and, in many ways, this indie film provided more surprises than I was expecting. Most successful at sight gags, as opposed to verbal cleverness, this rude little picture pokes much fun at friendship and romantic entanglements in the modern era. Played to almost cartoonish proportions, however, the film lacks a grounded center to actually make the viewer identify with the characters and their dilemmas. Thus, you are left only with the jest--and that is decidedly hit or miss. Sometimes outrageously funny, sometimes just ridiculous nonsense--the film yields a plethora of comic highpoints and a variety of groan inducing lows. But, in its defense, it swings for the fence in an almost fearless way.
An appealing Christopher Masterson plays the central character, a newly married professional who hasn't consummated his three month old marriage. His bedroom failures are the highpoint of neighborhood and workplace speculation. One day at the office, he succumbs to the aggression of his sister-in-law (his supervisor and former girlfriend who speaks in the most preposterous fake accent you're likely to encounter) and allows himself to be mounted on her desk. Reeling with guilt, his eclectic group of oddball friends convince him of a genius (only in the movies) plan to even the playing field with the spouse he loves. How? Of course, he plots to arrange for her to cheat on him! Brilliant! Enter a traveling actor, the indispensable Patrick Warburton, who accepts the assignment while in town for the stage production of "Waterworld: The Musical." The remaining film is populated with loads of innuendo and misunderstanding. Both Masterson and Warburton provide hilarious moments and the film nails some great satiric elements--the musical is inspired, the local men's hangout is hysterical, the weekly ball games are genuinely amusing. Everyone is trying very hard and I, quite frankly, appreciated the effort. It is comedy in overdrive--don't think something is funny, hang on, we'll have something else for you in a few seconds. Again, I reiterate, the film excels on its sight gags much more than its dialogue. This isn't going to rank as a comic masterwork, but it has slight pleasures provided you're in the correct mood. You'll either find this silly fun or just plain silly. I think, for me, it was a bit of both. KGHarris, 3/11.

Excellent Indie Comedy,

It's always refreshing to see an indie film that's thoughtful and fun and MADE FOR EACH OTHER scores on both accounts. If the language seems a bit over-the-top in the first few scenes, going for a Farley Brothers' vibe, hang in there. The film rapidly settles into a groove and finds its own voice.
There's a lot to recommend this film: inspired performances, the wonderful fantasy and flashback sequences, the musical adaptation of WATERWORLD, and lots of chicken wing sauce. You'll be amazed how many famous faces pop up!
