Editorial Reviews

Super deluxe five disc (two CDs + three NTSC/Region 0 DVDs) edition includes 11 remixes on the second CD and the three bonus DVDs, all housed in a metal box.. 2011 collection from the German Hard/Industrial rockers spanning their entire career, 1995-2011, and including one brand new track, 'Mein Land'. Rammstein have never been about subtlety and this compilation of their most popular tracks is proof that the band are capable of mixing genres and pushing boundaries without raising a sweat.

I was disappointed when I heard that Made In Germany was going to be a best of collection but my spirits were lifted when I heard about the inclusion of Mein Land and the remix album. That being said, the remix album was the main selling point for me. Luckily its pretty good, if not strange. In addition to the two discs, the collector's edition comes with a pretty slick overall presentation. The CD case is an elaborate fold out digipack featuring all of the band members faces (I believe they are actually white masks) and a heavy duty booklet. Unfortunately the only images in the booklet are a picture of all the white masks together. Other than that there are lyrics of all the songs (In German...) and the booklet itself is very clean looking.

THE ALBUM

I was slightly puzzled at the selection of songs on this compilation. There is only one song from Herzeleid and Liebe Ist Für Alle Da is sorely underrepresented. Meanwhile, Rosenrot has two entire songs (one would have been enough), neither of which are Benzin. Naturally Du Hast and Engel are included and the remaining bulk consists of songs from Mutter and Reise, Reise. I love those two albums but thought there should have been more of a cohesive smattering of tracks from their discography. And why is Mutter on here but not Feuer Frei? Let's not forget about Mein Land. It's a high energy ass-kicker which would sound at home on Reise, Reise or LIFAD. On the plus side, the older songs have been remastered (not to the extent of on the NIN Pretty Hate Machine Remaster) but there is a definite increase in the aural details and volume. But wait, there's more!

THE REMIXES

This was the driving force behind my purchasing the album, as I already own all of Rammstein's studio albums.

There have been quite a few problems with this deluxe edition (wrong discs, packaging, etc). Check at [...] before ordering.

My order was delayed as Universal fixed the problems other reviews have discussed, but now that it's here it was well worth the wait.

I've been listening to Rammstein since the age of 16. I am now 31 years old, and I am still amazed and appreciative of how this band evolves with each album release. The box set is a great time capsule for long-time fans, and even though I briefly hesitated at purchasing (the usual thoughts: "so expensive! and don't I have most of this anyway?") I suspected Rammstein would come through again in making this a worthwhile purchase.

The presentation: Everything is nestled in a metal case with the Rammstein logo printed on top. My box even has a little discoloration from rust starting to form, so I suspect each box has a little variance to make it unique. The contents of the box are wrapped in a white cloth which unfolds into a cross, bearing the Rammstein logo and the years the set covers.

The CDs: Another reviewer has discussed the engineering and remastering of the songs, so I will simply say that the remixes are a nice addition, especially since I'm usually not too interested in their appearances on singles. These are the "best of the best" remixes.

The DVDs: This is what makes the box set for me. Every video has a 'making of' special. Of primary interest to me was the "Stripped" documentary, as I just turned in a college final on Rammstein's utilization of Leni Riefenstahl's footage a week ago. The 'making of' for this particular video features recent interviews with the video's director and members of the band. The candidness of the band offers a great deal of insight into how they approach videos for their songs.

This Best-of album is the culmination of some of the most popular Rammstein songs. There is a song from every album and represents the band's work. Rammstein makes note that the album is remastered and I have noticed a difference in every song, specifically the bass hits deeper notes. I gave the remixes a try but they weren't for me, apart from that it is a great album for loyal fans or for someone looking for a crash course in the most popular/well made songs.

Before buying this, I had imagined that there were new songs in here, especially as Rammstein started touring the US. Previously, it was stated that they were not intending on come to the States again.

The CD opens up like a flower, strangely enough, with flaps going in all different directions. Each flap has a bust of the members of the band and inside are 2 CDs. The 1st is a mixture of all the classics, such as 'Du Hast', 'Engel' and 'Mein Teil'. The latter has songs that were remixed with 'Black Strobe Remix' and 'Clawfinger Remix'.

It's definitely something to buy if you don't have any Rammstein music in your media library. If you do, you may want to consider waiting until you find a used version just to have the remixes.

I hope you enjoy Rammstein as I do.

Rammstein has always given their fans much respect when it comes to not doing things in a half-arsed way or ripping them off with money grabs like, for example, Depeche Mode. Which was why I was astounded when I received my box set in the mail yesterday and it was less than satisfactory. Luckily I came here and read a review that mentioned quality control issues. Here are the issues identified by Rammstein, who have said that any defects will be fixed.

1)missing/duplicate discs,
2) undeburred box edges (can cut skin),
3) Printing errors on metal box and/or metal slipcase
4) stained clothes
5) unsatisfactory book binding.

See the Rammstein site on how to exchange these items if you are affected.

Despite this, the box set is a magnificent thank you to fans. There is an enormous amount of material here, and the dvds have obviously been produced to high quality standards. And once the quality control issues have been resolved, it will probably be one of the best put together box sets in my collection.

The only downside, is that the music suffers from the loudness war. Since there is a maximum loudness level available to recording, (which is different from playback voulme, which you control), boosting the overall loudness of a song or track eventually creates a piece that is maximally and uniformly loud from beginning to end. This creates music with a small dynamic range (i.e., little difference between loud and quiet sections), rendering it fatiguing and robbing it of emotional power. In modern music, that means a drum hit is no louder than a quiet vocal-only section because both have been raised to the maximum by the mastering and/or recording engineer.

Nice, the metal box packaging is finally up. Sucks that its so expensive but worth getting for the 3 DVD's with all the videos and making of.
