Patrick Dempsey makes his full transition to romantic-comedy stardom in Made of Honor, flashing those winning dimples and twinkly baby blues to full fetching effect. The camera truly loves him, and his considerable affable charm calls to mind early Hugh Grant, winsome even in utter confusion. Dempsey plays Tom, a nice guy but a serial dater with a girlfriend in every zip code of New York; Michelle Monaghan is Hannah, Tom's BFF since college, who's decided she wants marriage and family. When she becomes unexpectedly engaged to Colin (Journeyman's Kevin McKidd, rather McDreamy himself), Tom realizes what the viewer's known all along--that Hannah is in fact his dream woman. It's When Harry Met Sally... meets My Best Friend's Wedding--but thankfully, Dempsey's Tom is far more sympathetic than Julia Roberts' snide schemer. The plot isn't exactly full of surprises, but the cast--and their amazing chemistry--are so winning that the film makes for the perfect date movie. Not only are all three leads charming in their own way, but the rich cinematography manages to make both Manhattan and the Scottish countryside look like glorious edens, one urban, one windswept. Monaghan is a revelation, quietly lovely as a young Carla Bruni, but with a flinty gumption that makes her all the more appealing. The supporting cast is rich, too, especially Sydney Pollack as Tom's serially marrying dad. (At his dad's fifth--or is it sixth?--wedding, Tom's new arm-candy "stepmom" gets tipsy and overly affectionate with guests as her new husband looks on fondly: "Ah... drunk as the night I first met her.") But at the core of the film are its big heart, and the connection between Tom and Hannah, deep and wide whether they end up just best friends or more. And the delight for viewers is knowing they'll be just as glowy either way.-- A.T. Hurley

4.0 out of 5 stars As Romantic Comedies Go, This One Has it Made September 16, 2008
Format:DVD
In college, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) was a lady's man. He slept with anyone who will have him. Sneaking into a room one night, he accidentally meets Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). Despite their less then great meeting, the two hit if off and become friends.

Flash forward 10 years, and little has changed. Tom spends every night with a different woman. And he spends all day hanging out with Hannah, who is now working for a museum. The two are close friends, but that is all.

Until one day when Hannah leaves on a six week trip to Scotland. It doesn't take Tom long to realize that he truly loves Hannah. In fact, the separation is killing him. He intends to act on his new found feelings as soon as she gets back.

But when Hannah returns, it is with Colin (Kevin McKidd) in tow. The two met in Scotland and are engaged. To further add to Tom's misery, Hannah asks him to be her maid of honor. Tom is reluctant, but decides he can break the wedding apart better from the inside. But with the ceremony only two weeks again, can Tom make Hannah fall for him?

So let's get the obvious out of the way first, the story is predictable. So, the movie is going to rise of fall based on how well everything else comes off.

And it comes off reasonably well. Hannah is likable from the start. I admit it took me a little while to warm up to Tom since I'm not a fan of cads. But as the movie progressed, I found it easy to root for him. In fact, I cared about the characters enough to get invested in the outcome.

And the story is funny. There are quite a few great moments that had me laughing, especially Tom's friends helping him learn how to be a maid of honor.

This movie is just an escapist romantic comedy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great date movie! October 6, 2008
Format:DVD
I can't believe all the low ratings for this movie! I liked it...it's not super original and it's very predictable but hey, it's a date movie. There's some funny moments and yes, it's a basic rehash of "My Best Friend's Wedding" but I think "Made of Honor" is better. I didn't really like "My Best Friend's Wedding" mainly because I didn't really like Julia Robert's character and there really wasn't any chemistry between her and her male co-star. I am a Dempsey fan (loved him in "Enchanted"...) and I thought Patrick Dempsey was very charming in "Made of Honor." I think the chemistry between him and Michelle Monaghan was great. It's a cute movie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Predictable plot, stale humor January 24, 2010
Format:DVD
A predictable storyline, dragging pace, and jokes stale enough to make you wince keep this film from getting off the grond. Many attempts at humor feel canned and fail miserably - an elderly woman proudly wearing a sex toy she mistakes for a necklace, a matronly Scottish aunt suddenly blurting out "Athol" at the dinner table, suggesting a possible name for her nephew's future child...and so on. I sensed no real chemistry between Patrick Dempsey and Michelle Monaghan either. I wondered why anyone would want to root for her in the end when she humiliates her husband-to-be at their wedding, a man who treats her like royalty and showers her with devotion throughout the film, only to fling herself into the arms of her long time best friend, an immature womanizer who never realized he had any real feelings for Hannah, though he's had ten years to think about it. The movie ends with Dempsey flying off a runaway horse and into the wedding chapel right before the "I do's" like a....well, like an Athol. Ugh. The one star is for Sidney Pollack, who is the funniest thing in the movie.

Tom (Patrick Dempsey) is a commitment-phobic, marriage-avoiding playboy who spends most of his waking hours tomcatting around Manhattan (what a novel concept for a romantic comedy). Only Hannah (Michelle Monaghan), his "best friend" of ten years, has the strength of character to call him on his shallowness - even though anyone with even the most rudimentary knowledge of romantic comedy knows full well that the two of them are just made for each other (apparently, the only people in these situations stupid enough not to realize this universal truth are the couples themselves). But just as Tom decides he's in love with Hannah and is willing to make a lifelong commitment to her, the latter turns up engaged to a kilt-wearing dreamboat ("Rome"'s Kevin McKidd) she met in Scotland. Unaware of how Tom feels about her, Hannah asks him to be her "maid of honor" at the wedding, a role he reluctantly accepts, believing that this will place him in the perfect strategic position to sabotage the nuptials.

As with virtually all romantic comedies these days, "Made of Honor" takes place in a squeaky-clean, never-never land version of New York City, where everyone attends swanky functions, dines at five-star restaurants, and drinks café mocha lattes, with nary a hint as to what any of these fantastically well-off characters do to earn all their money. And, of course, almost everyone we meet is white (with a token African-American or two, as always, thrown in for good measure).

The late Sydney Pollack plays Tom's oft-married father, whose penchant for running through women at an alarming rate shows that the apple doesn't fall far from the tree in that family.

Is a very simple movie, romantic, sometimes funny, and nothing extraordinary happens but has his charm. Because sometimes in our lives we have the same silly things. I like it.
