Book Description

December 30, 1899
Everything is made in Mexico, from decorative mirrors to silver jewelry to plastic dolls and ceramic dishware--and contemporary art. Made in Mexico examines recent art produced within and about Mexico. Historically, Mexico has always welcomed artists and writers from abroad as a way of enriching and diversifying the national character. This publication examines the phenomenon from a contemporary perspective for the first time. Made in Mexico highlights the current generation of cultural production within the context of prevailing global and conceptual art vocabularies. Speaking within a larger dialogue, Made in Mexico includes international artists whose work does not necessarily come out of a local experience, yet draws upon a distinctly Mexican vernacular--whether iconographic, architectural, or environmental. Three themes structure the book's organization: "Local Identities" addresses how contemporary artists approach the essential characteristics of Mexican identity as projected through popular imagery, cultural iconography, and traditional art forms. "Mexican Modernisms" addresses the problems of modernist aesthetic ideologies within the context of Mexican architecture, design, and sculpture. And "Social Spaces" addresses artistic inspirations found within the environmental landscape. Included are works by artists such Francis Als, Daniel Buren, Andrea Fraser, Thomas Glassford, Erik G ngrich, Terrence Gower, Andreas Gursky, Mona Hatoum, Sharon Lockhart, Teresa Margolles, Yasumasa Morimura, Gabriel Orozco, Damin Ortega, Pedro Reyes, Sebastin Romo, Daniela Rossell, Santiago Sierra, Melanie Smith.

About the Author

Francis Alys was born in Antwerp, Belgium, in 1959. Trained as an architect, Alys moved to Mexico in 1986 and within a few years began to work as a visual artist. Known initially for his paintings, Alys has also become a highly regarded video artist, interventionist and performance artist. His work received a great deal of attention in 2002, when he staged a ceremonial procession commemorating The Museum of Modern Art's move from midtown Manhattan to its temporary home in Long Island City, Queens. Alys has also exhibited work in group exhibitions at The Hayward Gallery, London, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York.

Andrea Fraser was born in Billings, Montana, in 1965. A retrospective of her work was shown in the fall of 2003 at the Kunstverein in Hamburg; other solo exhibitions have been held at Friedrich Petzel Gallery and Pat Heart Gallery in New York, and the Vancouver Museum of Art. Her project Preliminary Prospectus for Corporations was included in Documenta_11. Fraser lives and works in New York.

Andreas Gursky was born in 1955 in Leipzig, East Germany, and studied at the prestigious Kunstakademie, Dusseldorf. His first solo gallery show was held at Galerie Johnen & Schottle, Cologne, in 1988. A solo museum exhibition followed the next year, at the Museum Haus Lange, Krefeld. By this time, Gursky was increasing the scale of his photographs, and by the 90s was using the largest photographic paper available; by 2000 he was combining sheets to make images larger still. In the early 1990s Gursky began to use digital technology for retouching and altering negatives, and more recently he has produced work entirely fabricated by computer. Gursky has had recent solo exhibitions at Matthew Marks Gallery, New York, and White Cube, London. A major mid-career retrospective traveled the world in 2001, with U.S. stops at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Sharon Lockhart's photography and film work has been widely exhibited in national and international venues. A major survey exhibition of her work was presented at the Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam in 1999 and traveled to the Kunsthalle Zurich and the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg in 2000. She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, such as the 1997 Santa Fe Biennial and the 1997 and 2000 Whitney Biennials.

Teresa Margolles was born in 1963.

Gabriel Orozco was born in Veracruz, Mexico, in 1962, and currently lives in Mexico City, New York and Paris. He has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. His work was included in Documenta X (1997) and the 2003 Venice Biennale; he is represented in New York by Marian Goodman Gallery.

Santiago Sierra was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1966, and has been based in Mexico since 1995. After his first solo show, at the Galeria Angel Romero, Madrid, in 1994, followed exhibitions at P.S.1 in New York, Kunstwerke in Berlin, CAC Cincinatti, and various museums and galleries throughout Latin America and Europe. He most recently was chosen to represent Spain at the Venice Biennale 2003.

Agnes Martin was born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 1912, and she moved to the United States in 1931. Her first solo exhibition was held in 1958 at the Betty Parsons Gallery, New York. In 1967 she moved to New Mexico and abandoned painting for seven years. The early 1990s saw her work exhibited in solo shows at the Stedelijk Museum, and at the Whitney, New York, and later in the Menil Collection, Houston, in 2002. Martin died in 2004.
