A MOST unique CD/DVD Box set! Handcrafted in NOLA,
By
This review is from: Made in New Orleans: Preservation Hall (Audio CD)
Preservation Hall in New Orleans - home of the Preservation Hall Jazz Band - miraculously survived Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but many of the musicians were displaced. I've highly recommended the beautifully recorded CDs - with their handcrafted packaging - produced by Ben Jaffe, son of the PHJB founder Allan Jaffe. The band was in the middle of new sessions when Katrina hit and the disc was never completed. When the younger Jaffe returned to NOLA he discovered the master tapes were saved. To celebrate this he has produced one of the most original jazz releases this year. Made in New Orleans: The Hurricane Sessions is a cardboard box containing, not only a CD with the '05 sessions and some archival recordings, and a 31-minute DVD with great rare newsreel and performance footage at the Hall from a German film crew (PLUS an appearance at the Newport Jazz Fest) , but a whole array of reproduced memorabilia - different items in each box. A most unique tribute to a legendary American jazz institution.

Yeah, I know what it means to miss New Orleans,
This review is from: Made in New Orleans: Preservation Hall (Audio CD)
The recordings here are pretty uniformly great for a myriad of reasons. Basically, the music takes my heart back to a place that I loved for thirteen years of my life in a way that nothing else can. Also, the mementos included, among them a K&B film envelope with authentic photos of musicians who performed at Preservation Hall are priceless. For those of you reading this that don't know what I'm talking about, unfortunately, for you, you probably never truly will. But everyone else who's blood ran K&B purple...you'll just love this.

Little for the money,
This review is from: Made in New Orleans: Preservation Hall (Audio CD)
I bought this as a Christmas gift for a very dear friend of mine. I was quite disappointed to hear that while the 1 CD and 1 DVD were good, that was all you got except a few trinkets for the money. FOr $70 I would have expected a couple or three CD's. Kind of like a weekend on Bourbon Street. Better watch your money or your will lose it.....
