Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Independent to the core The Bad Plus are the first and only group to bridge the gap between no-compromise jazz and cutting edge alternative.

They re road dogs, equally at home in jazz clubs, rock venues, concert halls, and festivals around the world.

Their new album is Made Possible. Nine originals, tightly performed, but infused with energy, irreverence, and an attitude of surprise. Picking up where their acclaimed collection, Never Stop, left off, Made Possible is another creative musical advance: music made to capture and hold the attention of aware listeners everywhere.

It was only a year or two ago that a good friend introduced me to The Bad Plus as something "I might like". I did.
Someone, somewhere will be able to categorize them, but until they do I'll refrain from attempting.
This particular album I bought as MP3s so that I could hear it immediately, and the only comment I can muster is: if you like any of their other albums, you'll like this even more. It has been playing on a loop for three consecutive work-days and has increased my productivity and personal happiness by some significant amount. Probably.
Regardless, I love it.

I'm lucky to be in St. Louis and be able to hear TBP every January for the last number of years. I love the way they've evolved. This album shows them at their best. I wanted to hear every song multiple times. They still keep the basic trio sound, but some other sounds have been added occasionally. They work well. Satire and irony are detectable in the song titles and the music itself. "in Stiches" is certainly not, but may be their masterpiece. What thoughts come to mind with "Re-Elect That"? This album will continue to be played for a long time.

I found Made Possible to be a little mellower than their previous effort, but I really liked it nonetheless. I love progressive jazz, and especially bands like The Bad Plus who take jazz in new and unexpected directions.

great to see a group that has been around for a while and can still put out an album that might be their very best. highly recommended if you are new to the trio, or are a longtime fan.

I love The Bad Plus. They are one of the few bands for which I have bought a copy of every CD they have made. Made Possible really feels like it picks up where Never Stop left off. The band are still pushing, still trying new things, but I'm not yet convinced by the inclusion of electronic sounds here....and the writing just doesn't feel as strong as earlier records...is this the band 'maturing'? If so, I hope they all hit midlife crisis soon and recapture some of the early fire.

I think that Never Stop and Made Possible could have been edited into one killer album, rather than two good albums.

Whatever, it's just my opinion (so far) as a long-standing fan. I might be missing something. Anyway - a 3-star Bad Plus record is still well worth a listen.

Really like this band and see them every year when they pass through town.
Two members originate from these parts and one from a state over.
The compositions are getting a bit more "out there" on this outing.
Glad they ditched the singer on this one.
Would recommend to any Bad Plus fan.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a concert where Halloween, Alaska performed. They were good but David King was awesome. I was then even luckier and got to see The Bad Plus at the Dakota here in Minneapolis...those guys were terrific. This is a great CD... Pound for Pound, the first track, is gorgeous. Ethan Iverson's playing is intoxicating... amazing it is legal, it is so good.

I first started following The Bad Plus when I heard "1979 Semi-Finalist" from Give on Pandora. This album seems more cohesive and digestible then some of their earlier stuff, yet it's still mindblowingly creative. The use of electronic sounds in this album is not obtrusive in the slightest. Great album.
