Product Description

This opener entered the marketplace in 1954. It was originally sold by the Swing A Way company. Some of these openers are still working 40 years on. They are made from carbon steel. Feature skip proof feed wheels and are gear driven. The cutter, gears and wheel are all heat treated and zinc plated. Newer, thicker and more comfortable pads have been added. This is the very same but slightly better great can opener. No compromise. No shortcuts. I volunteer at a no kill animal shelter and have sliced my hand open numerous times on the can openers we use to open the dog food. I have purchased numerous can openers, in hopes of finding a long lasting one that works. This is it! Every previous can opener has been made in china. This unit is hand crafted in the USA and it shows! It has by far out lasted other openers used at the shelter and works soooo much better. The engineering and craftsmanship is unparalleled. I highly recommend this and am purchasing several more to donate to the shelter. I know this seems like a lot of words praising a can opener but in all honesty for the price, you will never need another.

I use a can opener every day. I feed my dog wet (canned) dog food daily. My new "Made in USA" can opener is the best hand held can opener I have ever used. From the first time you'll notice the difference. It has a padded set of handles that feel good when squeezed, and it rolls around the lid with almost no effort at all. If you want a fine product, you should buy one of these.

This is the best kitchen applicance that I have bought in years. My previous can opener would only partially open cans or mangle the lids.

We bought one can opener that lasted twenty years. Then about eight years ago we bought another can opener. And another. And another. And another. We bought cheap grocery store ones. We bought regular ones and french cut ones. We bought very expensive designer kitchen appliance store ones. We bought and bought and bought and they broke and broke and broke. Or at least stopped opening cans which is the same thing as far as we're concerned..

Then we bought EZ Duz it. It took us a few cans to remember how to line it up and make it turn easily (remember it had been eight YEARS since our last decent can opener.) No it does not do the french cut where you don't have an edge that will slice you. So far we've never been cut by an opened can lid so we're not worried about that.

We just wanted to buy a can opener that would still be cutting cans months (years! we're aiming for years!) later. This one does. Thank you John J. Steuby Company!!!

Update six months later - the can opener is still working. (that beats the box store brand already.)

Still working. We bought another one for our church kitchen when the one there died (or stopped cutting open cans.)

I bought my **very last** SwingAway probably about 18 months ago. It was okay for a few months, but then began to perform about as well as those 3 or 4 dollar can openers that you toss into the cart at the grocery store to get by with 'til you get to a department store and pick up a new SwingAway. In other words, absolute garbage. I really had thought that I must have somehow damaged my SwingAway, because who the H E double hockey sticks has EVER heard of a bad one??? I've just turned 46 and I'd never seen it or even heard of it my entire life.... 'til I bought the last one, which I now know - thanks to many wonderful fellow Amazon users - is what it used to be in name only.

After stumbling upon this one while browsing Amazon and then reading the reviews and finding out SwingAways are now garbage, I just *had* to order this can opener. I am sooooo glad I did! It's carrying the torch, so to speak. LOL. In fact, I'll definitely be ordering a back-up soon. Great product. If you order it, you will NOT be sorry. You'll be doing your happy dance :D

(This review probably sounds a bit overly enthusiastic considering that we're talking about a can opener. But I have a dog and 3 cats and I open lots of cans :P)

I really do hope that this helps someone to make the right decision and buy it :)

I have been using KitchenAid can openers over the years because I didn't think you could beat their quality for the price. The last one that I bought was much more cheaply made than in previous years and I checked, and like everything else, now made in China. When this can opener arrived I had to try it out. It is very tough. It is very simple, and isn't as sleek as many others, but who cares when it opens cans without strain and flawlessly every time. I'm also glad to help support American manufacturing. If you need a can opener, this is the one! Look nowhere else.

I needed a can opener for my pet's food and I said to myself, "Oh let me get the faberware brand it's an ok name". 13 bucks sunk with tax. That damn thing started slipping gears and the plasticky handle jammed up and cracked up that I had to glue it back. It was ok for a while but gears slipped AGAIN and it was soon an ordeal to use. Then I bought another 99c bargain opener out of lack of time, it worked better than the faberware. But is pretty flimsy and bends in my hand. I then took the chance on this "made in usa can opener".

And I want to tell you to STOP LOOKING AT OTHER OPENERS. This one is THE REAL DEAL.

Who gets excited about these things? Normally people don't give a hoot about such a mundane product. But this product is so WELL MADE, so comfortable to use, I really am overjoyed at this choice. I have to tell you about it because I spent some time dealing with crap products that it is a giant relief to trust in a product that is so well made and so functional, I have to give back to them for making my chore just a TINY BIT easier. :)

Construction:
First off it's built ROCK SOLID. Strong steel turning crank, Strong steel construction, comfortable to grip handle. A real solid tool, rugged and reliable. NO COMPLAINTS. I could probably hammer nails with this thing it seems strong, and definitely drop proof. I know other plastic brands would crack from drops. This thing would probably bounce back. The rubber handles are soft and durable as well. Just enough cushion for the job.

Use:
I open pet food cans constantly and it operates smooth as silk, no gear slipping, just coasting along and easy to pierce and open the can.
